in its report the committee was unable to establish whether the no observed effect level (noel) of 40 mg/kg bw claimed by the study authors was truly a noel or a minimal effect level and therefore only gave the substance a temporary acceptance. at the same time the committee recommended that information be sought on actual residues occurring in food to allow an evaluation as to whether the maximum residue limits in community legislation remained appropriate and also that the limits should in future be specified in terms of n-hexane (the most toxic of the isomers).
