English

goeie aand dames and here. today i will be speaking about gender equality. for many years gender equality or lack of equality has been an issue in society. even though society has taken big steps forward in terms gender equality. there are still forms of gender stereotypes in media which do not promote gender equality. there are also issues which take place that do not promote gender equality for example i have a cigarette advert here which has a man playing sport and the caption which says “manne van aksie” and this okay if you want a manly advert. the problem comes in when they include a woman in the advert who is in the background while the man is in the foreground like he is more important than she is. the woman also looks like she is looking up to the man who is playing sport on the top of the advert. this advert does not promote gender equality. if advertisements want to have a stereotypical manly advert they should not involve a woman who is made to look inferior to a man. in another article i have here a famous actress named sofia vegara has been accused of abusing her husband. it is well known that men abuse woman but this article breaks this stereotype and shows that woman can be abusive as well. there are 16 days of activism for abuse against woman and children. there is however no event like this for men. i feel that to promote gender equality people should be made aware that men are abused as well and that there should be campaigns just like there is for woman to prevent this. in the poem eksieperfeksie the poet speaks about a girl who has bulimia which is an eating disorder commonly associated with females. this poem conforms to the stereotype. however there are males who suffer with the same disorder that are never spoken of. i feel that in order to promote gender equality society needs to be made aware that men also suffer with female associated disorders and their body image. i feel that for gender equality to exist at no time should one gender be favoured over the other and this links on to all aspects including sports and careers not just in media
