-either directly by the distillation, with or without added flavourings, of natural fermented products, and/or by the maceration of vegetable substances and/or the addition of flavourings, sugars or other sweetening products listed in paragraph 3 (a) and/or other agricultural products to ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin and/or to distillate of agricultural origin and/or to spirit as defined in this Regulation

(3) The spirit drinks obtained by macerating unfermented whole fruit such as that referred to in point 2 in ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin, followed by distillation, may be called 'geist', with the name of the fruit.

I therefore contacted my fellow MEPs in the other political groups and said that we should perhaps try, for the fact of the matter was that the Council said that it wanted to retain the substances for three reasons: firstly, to induce rutting in cattle, which is the most important area of usage; secondly, for foetus maceration and mummification, also mainly in the case of cattle; and, thirdly, for pyometra in cattle.

It is also appropriate to maintain the possibility of authorising, under strict and verifiable conditions so as to prevent any possible misuse and any unacceptable risk for public health, its use for the treatment of certain conditions (foetus maceration or mummification and pyometra in cattle) which have serious consequences for animal health and welfare.

Tevens is het gewenst de mogelijkheid van het toestaan te handhaven onder strikte en controleerbare voorwaarden, teneinde eventueel misbruik en eventueel onaanvaardbaar risico voor de volksgezondheid en misbruik ervan voor de behandeling onder bepaalde voorwaarden (maceratie of mummificatie van foetussen bij runderen en pyometra bij runderen) die ernstige gevolgen voor de gezondheid en het welzijn van dieren kunnen hebben te voorkomen.

The Commission shall present within two years from 14 October 2003 to the European Parliament and to the Council, a report on the availability of alternative veterinary medicinal products to those containing oestradiol 17ß or its ester-like derivatives for the treatment of foetus maceration or mummification in cattle, and for the treatment of pyometra in cattle, and present to them the following year any necessary proposals intending to replace these substances in due time.

Secondly, producers of traditional rosé wines, which are produced by rapid maceration and delicate pressing, see this as a serious attack against the 'rosé' designation and against the image of quality, developed over so many years, of wines such as these rosés from Provence, which still retain the aroma of the land and which have ensured the success of rosé wines in general.

Spirit drinks as referred to in Article 1 (4) (i) (2) of Regulation (EEC) No 1576/89 may be designated by 'spirit'preceded by the name of the fruit if the label also bears the words 'produced by 'maceration and distillation'.

De in artikel 1, lid 4, letter i, punt 2, van Verordening (EEG) nr. 1576/89, bedoelde gedistilleerde drank mag met »eau-de-vie" in combinatie met de naam van de gebruikte vrucht worden aangeduid, wanneer op het etiket wordt vermeld »verkregen door maceratie en distillatie".
