On 10 May 2006, the Commission received a notification of a proposed concentration pursuant to Article 4 of Council Regulation (EC) No 139/2004 [1] by which the undertaking Gaz de France group ("GDF", France) enters into a full merger within the meaning of Article 3(1)(a) of the Council Regulation with the Suez group ("Suez", France) by way of exchange of shares.

The commitments entered into by the merging parties include, most notably, the divesture of Suez shares in Distrigas, the Belgian gas incumbent, which has, as you are aware, also entered the French market, the divesture of GDF shares in the alternative Belgian gas and electricity provider SPE and the abandonment of any control, by law or de facto, Suez has over the Belgian gas transmission network operator Fluxys.

2.6 In the case of liquid bulk cargo, the closure of the Suez Canal following the Six-Day War and the continued growth in demand for crude oil resulted in an increase in maximum ship size from 85,000 DWT in 1968 to 560,000 DWT [2] in 1976. A number of European ports took steps to allow such ships to dock there. Once the first oil crisis struck in 1973, these ships ceased to be profitable and, ultimately, they were scrapped. The new-build tankers of the 1980s and 1990s did not continue the trend for bigger and bigger ships. The size of large tankers is stable at around 300,000 DWT. Not until 2002 were, once more, a few 400,000 DWT Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCCs) built; there is still adequate port capacity to cater for them.

2.6 Lejamo masas kravu pārvadājumos savā laikā Suecas kanāla slēgšanas dēļ pēc Sešu dienu kara pieauga maksimālais kuģa izmērs, un nemitīgi augošais pieprasījums pēc jēlnaftas palielinājās no 85000 DWT 1968. gadā uz 560000 DWT [2] 1976.gadā. Vairākas Eiropas ostas parūpējās, lai šie kuģi varētu tajās ienākt. Saistībā ar pirmo naftas krīzi 1973.gadā izrādījās, ka šie kuģi vairs nav rentabli, un galu galā tie tika norakstīti kā vraki. Būvējot jaunus tankkuģus 1980-tajos un 1990-tajos gados, kuģu izmēra pieaugums vairs nav novērojams. Lielo tankkuģu izmēri joprojām svārstās ap 300000 DWT robežās. Tikai 2002.gadā atkal tika uzbūvēti daži ULCC-supertankkuģi (Ultra Large Crude Carrier — izcili lieli jēlnaftas pārvadātāji) ar kravnesību 400000 DWT, kuru rīcībā vēl ir pietiekamas ostas jaudas.
