Jag tvivlar inte på att Medelshavsunionen kommer att kvarstå som ett samlingsnamn, men jag vill inte komma ihop mig med någon.

Bruket av geografiska beteckningar som hänvisar till vissa områden och -undantagsvis -vissa länder bör genom gemenskapsregler reserveras för dessa områden och länder, under förutsättning att den fas i tillverkningen då den färdiga varan får sina karakteristika och slutliga egenskaper, fullbordas i det geografiska området i fråga. Genom att på så sätt ge de berörda producenterna exklusiva rättigheter kommer gemenskapsreglerna att säkerställa att beteckningarna i fråga fortsätter att tjäna som ursprungsbeteckningar och hindra att beteckningarna blir allmän egendom och samlingsnamn. Beteckningarna i fråga fyller också funktionen att informera konsumenten om ursprunget för produkter som kännetecknas av de råvaror som använts eller av speciella processer som används vid tillverkningen.

Whereas Community rules should reserve, for certain territories among which certain countries may, by way of exception, appear, the use of geographical designations referring to them, provided that the stages of production during which the finished product acquires its characteristics and definitive properties are completed in the geographical area in question; whereas, by thus conferring exclusive rights on the producers concerned, the Community rules will ensure that the designations in question continue to serve as indications of provenance and will prevent them from entering the public domain and becoming generic terms; whereas the designations in question also perform the function of informing the consumer as to the provenance of products characterized by the raw materials used or by the special processes employed in their manufacture;
