Guidonia Montecelio, an ancient fortified castrum, lies 12 kilometres to the northwest. It was home to the first stable populations starting in 998, which settled around the fortress, on the highest point of the hill.

Un rifugio dorato la cui fama non si estinse negli anni, tanto che all’inizio del Novecento Positano accolse persino molti profughi politici, dai russi reduci dalla Rivoluzione di ottobre ai tedeschi ostili al nazionalsocialismo.

The church was originally the aristocratic chapel of the Princes Caracciolo where they were buried until the mid-19th century. It has an annexed monastery whose cloister (demolished to build the new city hall) had a lovely well.The monastery was built by Fanzago, who was responsible for the marble works "Madonna in Gloria con Offerenti" (Madonna in Glory with Offerers) and "Crocifissione".The ceiling of the church was painted by a student of Solimena, Angelo Maria Ricciardi, representing the Coronation of the Virgin with Prince Caracciolo and his Court, in 1747. The Earthquake, inspired by the earthquake of 1732, is by the same artist.
