Fu eretto all'inizio della Via Traiana, o Appia Traianea, tra il 114 e il 117 d.C. e fu dedicato all’imperatore Traiano, ottimo principe e benemerito di Benevento.L'imponente monumento è alto 15.45 metri mentre il fornice (l'arcata) misura 8.60 metri.Si presenta di ordine composito, con elegantissime proporzioni e mirabili rilievi sulle due facciate.Il lato dell'Arco verso la città comprende opere e scene di pace e di benemerenze civili mentre quello verso la campagna rappresenta scene militari o connesse all'attività dell'imperatore nelle province.Le scene che ornano il fornice ricordano i rapporti dell'imperatore con la stessa città di Benevento.Nell'attico delle due facciate è possibile leggere l'iscrizione di dedica all'Imperatore figlio di Nerva.L'intera opera, vista da ciascun lato, si può dividere in sei sezioni longitudinali: in basso, a destra e a sinistra, ci sono i pannelli che celebrano l'ingresso di Traiano in Roma nel 99, la parte rivolta alla campagna esalta, nei pannelli, l'opera di Traiano a favore delle province mentre nel fornice si esalta l'impegno a favore di Benevento.Alcuni rilievi si riferiscono all'istituzione alimentare che Traiano estese a tutta l'Italia, altri furono realizzati per celebrare e ricordare quanto l'imperatore aveva fatto a favore del commercio, della pace e del riordino militare.Singolare è la presenza di un'aquila nel pannello di sinistra della fronte nord-est: si tratta, secondo gli studiosi, di una sigla che gli artisti mettevano alle opere pubbliche, sulle quali vigeva il divieto di apporre la firma.

It was erected at the start of the Via Traiana, as an extension of the Appian Way between 114 and 117 AD and was dedicated to the Emperor Trajan, an excellent princeps and meritorious symbol of Beneventum.This important monument is 15.45 metres while the arching measures 8.60 metres.It has a composite order, with elegant proportions and wonderful reliefs on both façades.The side facing the city shows the works and scenes of peacetime and civil merit, while the side facing the countryside represents military scenes or scenes involving the Emperor's activities in the province.The scenes decorating the arcade tell of the Emperor's relations with Beneventum itself.On the attic storey of the two façades it is possible to read the inscription dedicated to Trajan, son of Nerva.Seen from each side, the entire work can be divided into six longitudinal sections: at the bottom, on the right and left are panels celebrating Trajan's entry into Rome in the year 99 AD, panels on the part facing the countryside exalt the works of Trajan for the provinces, while the arching depicts Trajan's commitment to Beneventum.A number of reliefs refer to the food institution that Trajan extended throughout Italy, while others were done to celebrate and commemorate what the emperor had done for trade, peace and regulation of the military.One unusual feature in the left-hand front north-east panel: according to scholars they are the initials that artists placed on public works which it was forbidden to sign.
