Hamas and Abbas' Fatah movement have been at odds for years, a spat that culminated in Hamas' bloody rout of Fatah in Gaza and its takeover of the territory.

وكانت حركتا حماس وفتح (عباس) على خلاف منذ سنوات والذي بلغ ذروته عندما هزمت حماس فتح هزيمة دموية نكراء في غزة واستولت منها على الأراضي.

But past attempts to broker a power-sharing deal among the rival Palestinians factions have failed. Prospects remain dim, with Hamas increasingly entrenched since its takeover of Gaza.
