THREE LEVELS OF MAN 1 Corinthians 2:14-3:1-4 September 9, 2007, SUN a.m. People were put into different levels or can we say categories. People are described into various levels according to association, gender, race, and religion; as well as by names and nationalities We sometimes use such terms as Filipino-American, Chinese-Filipino, and Spanish-Filipino, Filipino-tribe. God himself actually puts people into different levels. How? In 1 Corinthians we find that God actually puts people into three levels of people. These three levels are 1. The natural man—I Corinthians 2:14 2. The Carnal man—I Corinthians 2:15 3. The Spiritual Man—I Corinthians 3:1 Let each one of us find out where God puts us in one of these levels. I- NATURAL MAN The bible teaches in 1 Corinthians 2:14: “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” The word “natural” refers to a person who is governed by their own senses and desires. It speaks of one who lives for the present world, having no respect to spiritual or eternal things. Natural man does what come naturally. When the Bible speaks of the natural man it is speaking of someone who is not saved. They have never been born again. They have had a natural birth but they have never had a spiritual birth. We see that the natural man is: A. Earthly minded The word “natural” speaks of one who is governed by their own senses and desires. They do not live their life according to God’s desires, but their own desires. In Ephesians 2:3 Paul describes the life of a lost person, or the natural man. We read, “Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.” When Paul speaks of a person’s “conversation” he actually describes how a person lives, more specifically, how a lost person lives. They live according to the lusts of the flesh and live to fulfill the desires of the flesh. Many of us in this place can remember how we lived before we got saved. We lived after this world instead of the world to come. Their life is merely a reflection of who and what they are. A person is not lost because they sin. They sin because they are lost. A person is not a sinner because they sin. They sin because they are a sinner. We can see the attitude of this unsaved lost person toward the holy bible in 1 Corinthians 2:14 when the Bible says that the “natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him.” The word “receiveth” literally means “to welcome.” The natural man does not welcome spiritual things in their life. That is why you can talk to lost people about coming to Church and your pleas for changing how they live but they turn a deaf ear. They are not interested in spiritual things. In 1 Corinthians 2:14 says why they are not interested on spiritual things because they are “foolishness unto him.” It speaks of that which is “distasteful.” Don’t be surprise if a lost person has no appetite for spiritual things. Then, we see that the natural person is: B. Spiritually Blinded 1 Corinthians 2:14 also state that when it comes to spiritual things, “neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” The natural man does not appreciate the things of God, and he does not apprehend the things of God. The word “discerned” means to “judge carefully or correctly.” The lost person lacks the ability to rightly and fully understand spiritual things. 1 Corinthians 2:11 says, “For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.” The only way a person can apprehend and comprehend spiritual things if he or she has the Holy Spirit. Since the Holy Spirit does not live in a lost person, they are blind to spiritual things. Jesus said to Nicodemus in John 3:3, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus replied, “How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?” (3:4). John 3:9 says that Nicodemus asked, “How can these things be?” He was a brilliant Pharisee, yet when it came to spiritual things he could not understand. You can be religious and belong to a Church and still be a natural man. They were probably baptized Church members but God still classified them as a natural man. Now, let’s look at a second level of man: II- CARNAL MAN The bible gives us scriptural passage about this carnality in 1 Corinthians 3:1, “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal.” Also in verse 3, Paul says “are ye not carnal.” The word “carnal” speaks of that which pertains to the flesh. This is a fleshly controlled person much like the natural man, yet this is a saved person for Paul says he is “in Christ,”. Carnal man is saved, he acts and lives like the natural man, as Paul said they “walk as men”—I Corinthians 3:3. If you were around them for while it would surprise you to find out they are saved. A. No Growth At All as Babies This carnal person is saved because of the word “babes in Christ.”—I Corinthians 3:1. However, being babes indicates that they have never grown in their Christian life. There was a point in their life when they accepted Christ as their Savior, but from that point on there has been little or any spiritual growth. There is something precious and exciting about their first words, their first steps, their first tooth, etc of the babies. However, if they are 10 or 12 years old and they can only say “da da da da” then it is no longer something to get excited about. Years have gone by since the glorious day they became a child of God but they have never grown spiritually. How do you think if we divide the Sunday school classes according to spiritual maturity instead of physical age? How do you feel if we allow spiritual babies in a nursery room as our policy in our church? This carnal man should have been eating spiritual steak but were still eating Gerber’s or babies food, he or she can not take hard teaching or doctrine but instead soft and those things only that goes for his taste. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 3:2, “I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.” 6. Furthermore, we see that carnal people: B. No Good Attitude as Babies We can see the reaction of the spiritual babies in 1 Corinthians 3:3, “For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?” We can see the attitude of those spiritual babies as illustrated in the behavior and doings, feelings of physical children fighting. Carnal people are always getting their feelings hurt, getting upset, causing problems and stirring up something. Every problems of every church can be found in the Corinth Church. Name it and the church of Corinth has it. The Church at Corinth is the model for a troubled Church. Why? Because so many of its members were spiritual babies and they acted like babies. Most, if not all Church problems, are caused by spiritual immature people. Take an imaginary scene in a certain worship service where we can find frowning faces, backbiting, and grudges on almost all the people who are part of that service. They talked against one another and against the preacher. Instead of acting like spiritual adults, carnal people act like spiritual babies. Carnal people always want to get revenge when they have been done wrong. Carnal people want to get even. They are not only spiritual babies, but they also act like it as described in I Corinthians 3:3. Have you been saved for many years but have never grown in the Lord? III- SPIRITUAL MAN Notice the Bible describe a third level as a spiritual man. In 1 Corinthians 2:15 speaks of “he that is spiritual.” When Paul condemned immaturity Paul said, “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual.” Since they were called “spiritual” therefore he is a saved person. This Christian stands in stark contrast to the carnal Christian. The carnal Christian is like the natural man, governed by the flesh; whereas, the spiritual man is governed by the Spirit. First, we see that the spiritual person has: A. Proper Conclusion When it comes to spiritual things, unlike the natural man, there is understanding. We read in 1 Corinthians 2:15 “But he that is spiritual judgeth all things.” The Spiritual man can discern God’s will and therefore reach proper conclusions. When the Bible says the spiritual man is able to judge “all” things meaning he is able to come to right conclusions about all things. The spiritual man unlike the carnal man does have discernment of what is right and wrong. 4. Furthermore, the spiritual man also has: B. Perfect Consecration There is a perfect personal consecration on that spiritual man for the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 2:15 the spiritual person “is judged of no man.” The world is never able to understand the spiritual man. There is a great changed about that person in how they live, how they think, who they are and what they do. The world doesn’t understand what makes this difference. The spiritual man is saturated by the Holy Scriptures for he is a Spirit-led rather than flesh-controlled. The spiritual man knows what God’s will and divine purpose for him or her in daily lives. He lives of what it really means to be a Christian. Their walk and talk, their actions and reactions, their beliefs and behavior, their being and doing reflects the dedication and consecration of their life.
