That hard work is a key to success is a well-known adage. Parents, teachers as well as others guide a child to work hard so that he can achieve good scores. Though a little bit of luck plays a positive role but I believe that hard work is the key to success. In fact if only luck is to be considered, no one would work but just wait till their lick shines up. But this is not the case. Today we see that technology has improved to such an extent that a person can have a lunch in Paris and a dinner in New York on the same day. There lies great contribution from people like the Wright brothers and Henry Ford to invent these means of transportation, which were the result of their hard-work and great efforts. If these people had waited for the D-day probably we could still have been using fire and wood to cook instead of using electrical ovens, and the globalization would not have taken effect. A person can excel in his career due to hard work. If he sits at home, no one would offer him a job unless he initiates the job searching process. Also if you are working in a company you will be promoted only because of working hard: luck does not lie in the picture. A student stands out firstly only if he studies hard. Many students after the graduation say that probably they were not luck enough to get good marks, or the evaluators must have marked their papers strictly. But again these are merely reasons that can’t be given preference. Today a young individual has the potential to do something and crave in reaching a particular acme. Whether your luck prevails or not condition being hard work and efforts, which will pick you up whenever you are.

Like a high-five after a splendid race , the player deserve it . It doesn’t mean they ll stop running or never run again , the high-five justifies the achievement and is a mark of respect . The tipping of hat in presence of successful man is not to pacify the man but to show our respect . Our elders have run a nice long race , they have won and as form of kinship we respect them . Life would be tasteless without appreciation and respect s the up-est form of appreciation. We shouldn’t respect them just because we should , we should respect them because we want to. A new member of team follows a legacy and later becomes the flag bearer . This cycle works only if its based on respect . Life is long and short at the same time , long enough that we enjoy the walk and short enough that running is the only option . We need to mix it up and the proportions are the crux of it. The experienced chef is better than amateur , even if they just hold their hand while they learn . Respect is how we establish this balance and success comes from balance and stability. If you want to improve your chances of success start respecting those who deserve it .

Home is the place where we are born and live. It is the sweetest place in the world. When we sense danger elsewhere we find safety in our home. When there is joy, we share it with other members of our home. Everybody loves home. For this reason are English poet has written: “Home, home, sweet home, There is no place like home.” My home is situated in the middle of the village. There are six members in our family. They are my father, mother, grand-father, grand-mother, my sister and myself. I am the second and the youngest child of my parents. So, being the youngest member, I enjoy love and affection of all. My father is an advocate. My mother is a teacher. She works in the Primary School in our village. My sister is a student. She reads in Women’s College. My grand-mother and grand-father love my parents. I am their favourite grand son. We live in a thatched house. The house indicates the simplicity of our family. It has mud walls. There are four rooms excluding the drawing room and the kitchen. My parents share the room adjoining the kitchen. My grand-mother and grand-father share the room near the drawing room. Another room is used as the store room. There is a spacious courtyard. We have also a cowshed with two cows and a little calf. I respect my parents and old grand-parents. I always obey their commands. My mother and grand-mother do not like to part with me for a moment. When I go to school, my grand-mother accompanies me up to the school. She waits for me at the school gate during the last period. My mother cooks food for us. As she is a teacher, she prepares food in the morning and preserves it properly for lunch. My sister who stays in the college hostel often comes and helps my mother in her work. I sometimes play interesting jokes with my grand-father and grand-mother. I am very fond of our garden. I water the flower plants at my leisure. When my grand-father goes to the cowshed, I go with him. I often kiss the little calf. When someone of my home falls ill, I take proper care. My uncle comes to our family every month. He brings sweets for me. Sometimes the friends of my father come and take dinner here. My father is a good host. On my birthday my mother invites other teachers of her school. They all come and share the joy with us. All the villagers respect my home. They say that ours is an ideal home.

Rainbow appears in the sky at the end of the rain. It is a long and wide band of seven colours. It forms a semicircle going from one end of the earth to the other. Scientists say that when sunlight passes through a thin medium to a denser medium, all the seven colours which are present in the white light form a semi-circular rainbow. The seven colours are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. People believe that if a rainbow appears after the rain, it is an indication that there will be no more rains. In Hindi, rainbow is called 'Indra Dhanush' which means the Bow of Lord Indra. According to Hindu mythology Lord Indra is the god of rain. The rainbow looks miraculously beautiful. Its sight is very soothing to the eye. Small children get very excited when they see a rainbow.

In today’s perspective, literacy does not mean about the writing and reading capabilities only. It has gained a broader meaning. It claims to guide people towards awareness and the change which is needed in order to achieve a better way of living. The National Literacy Mission was set up by Govt. of India on May 5th, 1988 with the aim to eradicate illiteracy from the country. The targeted group for the same was people belonging to the age group of 15 to 35 years. The literacy rate of India has been recorded 64.84% (2001 census) against 52.21% in 1991. It has been increased by more than 12% in a decade. Also, the literacy rate is supposed to be around 70-72% by the end of 2010 (As estimated by National Sample Survey). But the goal is yet to be achieved completely (i.e. to obtain 100% literacy). Right to education is one of the fundamental rights for the people. Education for all is the mission of UNESCO that has to be achieved by 2015. Currently, India falls below the threshold level of literacy rate i.e.75%. The National Literacy Mission Authority has been working to achieve its goal since its establishment. NLMA (National Literacy Mission Authority) works under the ministry of Human Resource & Development. The Govt. of India has launched several schemes to achieve the goals of NLM. The initial target for NLM was to focus on the people belonging to the age group of 15 to 25 years. There were 80 million people falling under this age group. It was a big challenge to address such a huge lot of people about literacy and its benefits. In a way, it was quite different from all technology based or economic missions. It was conceived as a social mission by all and that helped NLM to achieve the success. The other significant factor was the political will of leaders at different levels at that time. The politicians and bureaucrats understood the importance of this mission and it has gained a whole hearted success in several states viz. Kerala, Tamilnadu, Rajasthan, Manipur etc. The idea was to convince people about their active participation, mobilization of social forces. Soon it became a national consensus. Thanks to the advertisements, sensitization of local leaders and people’s participation. Given below are some of the pioneers of success for National Literacy Mission: Literacy campaigns have been launched in almost 600 districts of India.

While it is important to have excellent knowledege of an international language like English it is also equally important to take pride in one's own language. Unfortunately India is a multi-cultural multi-ethnic grouping. This reality is reflected in the formation of States within which there is relative homogeniety of language. Consequently India really has no real national language. The Central government has sought to impose a three language formula of Hindi + English + State Language India is really like a Europe which has been thrust together. Even the Euopean Union is today facing the same identity crisis. Even in Europe English has become the de-facto LINK language. Question is can India succeed by imposing Hindi as THE national language. The country has to be flexible. In the mid 1970s the then Janata Party run Central Government tried to withdraw support for schools which did not teach in Hindi. Luckily the Janata Government fell before completing its first term. Today India is forging ahead in the IT and BPO services field and becoming a global player because of its English language abilities. A national language definitely instils a sense of identity and pride in the nation. For the reasons mentioned earlier since it is not fair to impose Hindi on the entire nation from Kashmir to Kanyakumari we should continue to encourage the 3 language formula in Indian schools.

What is literacy? Literacy is crucial to the success of individuals in both their career aspirations and their quality of life. It is more than a basic reading ability, but rather an indication of “how adults use written information to function in society.” Strong literacy skills are closely linked to the probability of having a good job, decent earnings, and access to training opportunities. Individuals with weak literacy skills are more likely to be unemployed or, if employed, to be in jobs that pay little or that offer poor hours or working conditions. Traditionally, literacy has referred to the ability to read, understand, and use information. But the term has come to take on broader meaning, standing for a range of knowledge, skills and abilities relating to reading, mathematics, science and more. This reflects widespread and deep changes that have taken place in technology and in the organization of work over the past quarter century. The ability to use and apply key mathematics and science concepts is now necessary across a wide range of occupations. Why is literacy important? Literacy is fundamental for learning in school. It has an impact on an individual's ability to participate in society and to understand important public issues. And it provides the foundation upon which skills needed in the labour market are built. Technology, and the science behind it, permeates all aspects of our lives, from how we work and communicate to what we shop for and how we pay our bills. The complexity of today's world means that individuals need to have some level of proficiency in reading, mathematics and science in order to understand and participate fully in economic and social life. A population's literacy skills also have a bearing on how well a country performs economically. The world we live in today is vastly different from that of a generation ago. Technological change has transformed the way in which work is done; competition in many industries is global in nature; and the industrial structure of the Canadian labour market has rapidly evolved from a manufacturing and agricultural base to one based on services. These changes have, in turn, brought rising skill requirements. Countries that are successful in endowing their populations with strong skills are usually in a better position to meet the economic challenges of operating in a globalized information economy. Finally, having a population that has strong literacy skills also places a country in a better position to meet the complex social challenges that it faces. For example, strong literacy skills are linked to better health outcomes for individuals. A highly literate population will be better able to deal with issues of governance in a highly diverse society. And informed debate is needed to help us determine how best we can allocate scarce resources across competing priorities, such as education, health, investment in infrastructure, and social programs. Measuring student achievement: A key indicator of educational progress is the extent to which schools are successful in equipping their students with strong literacy skills. This indicator consists of two components. The first component relates to how well students perform on average, with higher average scores indicating, at a national or provincial level, stronger academic achievement overall. The second component concerns the range in scores between the top-performing students and those at the bottom of the distribution. Equity considerations suggest that a system that is able to achieve high scores through the strong performance of all students, regardless of their backgrounds, would be preferable to one where a strong average was the product of a small proportion of superachievers. There are efficiency reasons for wanting to reduce the size of the gap between the top and the bottom as well-the evidence shows that countries or provinces that have a narrower achievement gap also tend to have higher average literacy scores than those where that gap is larger. The role of socio-economic status: Many factors affect the size of the achievement gap. One important factor is socio-economic status (SES), which is typically measured based on parents’ education attainment, occupation, and/or income. Numerous studies in many countries have found that there is a strong tendency for students from families with higher SES to achieve higher scores than students from families with lower SES. However, it is also the case that countries with high average reading achievement tend to have less variability in scores across SES groups. The PISA results show that Canada had not only a smaller gap in achievement between students from different backgrounds but also high scores across SES groups. Germany, on the other hand, had the greatest gap in achievement when students with different SES backgrounds were compared. Similar results were found for mathematics and science achievement. However, as we have seen, family SES does not have a fixed effect. Some jurisdictions have made better progress in reducing the negative impact of low SES than others and individual schools vary in their success in this regard. The evidence also suggests that parents who are interested in and involved with their children’s education and who provide a home environment that stimulates learning have a positive impact on their children’s outcomes, regardless of their SES. Achieving both high average literacy scores and low inequality scores are desirable, and as we have seen, compatible goals. Part of the policy equation is understanding and assessing which policies and practices work best so that all students can benefit, regardless of where they live or how well off their parents are.
