Another feature of a world religion, however, lies in its capacity to adapt to local needs and conditions, and buddhism in malaysia seems to exhibit this quality. This is manifest through the effect of buddhist demographics in Malaysia. Of the local Buddhist population, over 98% are chinese, and this is impinging on the linguistic and cultural styles of many Penang temples while English-educated Chinese are entering the theravada sangha. These are accommodations to the demographic, social linguistic and cultural realities of the Malaysia Buddhist scene. However, it would be misleading to see this trend as one of simple sinification alone, for other forces are also at work. Somewhat paradoxically, it is through the channels of Taiwanese and western innovations that some of the creative and newer developments are being shaped, especially in lowering the boundaries between traditional Mahayana and Theravada schools. Thai Buddhism makes a unique contribution from its own revival in the forest monks movement, while there is a simultaneous move locally to distill a purer strain of Buddhism from superfluous and less orthodox cultural accretions, of which the MBMC claims to be the purest representative.

Most important, however, is the generational change, from the China- born to Malaysia- born sangha, and the rise of lay associations among Malaysian youth, The young sangha in particular are actively seeking a more Malaysian character and role of Buddhism, and while by no means rejecting external contacts and ideas are discouraging excessive commitment to teachers and school outside the country. It can not be denied that this may also be part of strategy for greater power in their own domains, as the recent micro- politics over the Pu Zhao temple suggest. However, the other element emerging from these internal Malaysian developments, is the active quest for an ideal Buddhist practice, appropriate to Malaysia, whether within the established sangha framework or in the direction of a renewed asceticism. Part of this quest involves the effort to render Buddhism more relevant to modern society, and to provide greater services to the community at large.
