Oaxaca se remonta a unos 11000 años, el ser humano ha dejado en Oaxaca muestra de su presencia en lugares como la cueva Guilá Naquitz, cerca de Mitla, donde se encontraron mazorcas de maíz prototípicas, datadas cerca de los 6 mil años de antigüedad. En Yagul, específicamente en la meseta Caballito Blanco se han hallado pinturas rupestres relacionadas a grupos nómadas ligados a los primeros pobladores del valle de Oaxaca. Numerosas aldeas con la capacidad de generar piezas avanzadas de alfarería ya existían en el año 1200 a. C. especialmente en la región de la laguna Zope.
