Positive—This movie could have been much better than it was, but it still had many interesting, entertaining elements. I am saddened by the fact that producers think all movies like this need sex to make them successful, when in most of them, like this one, the various scenes have little bearing on the actual plot. It could have been worse, much worse, but with the exception of a few “kissing scenes,” most of the so-called romantic action was superfluous. Paris does steal Helen away from her husband, which is wrong, but his actions are seen as a grave offense, and I didn’t feel they were passed off as being “acceptable” in the eyes of everyone else. Furthermore, one can easily see the problems that arose from his bad judgment and sin. One of the more interesting things I got from this movie was how well it showed how ones own actions can effect the lives of others, and how selfishness, arrogance, etc can effect people as well. Each character was faced with choices in life that could potentially alter the lives of many others, and the audience gets to watch as the consequences of those actions play out, showing the cost of their choices. Hector (Eric Bana as the elder prince of Troy) is probably the most interesting character in the film, and he is really the one worth rooting for. He loves his family, his country, and even sacrifices himself in several ways to defend his honor and his home. He fights fairly against an evil and corrupt king, and often chooses the honorable way over the “popular” way. I felt it was his selfless, honorable love that is the kind worth emulating, not the selfish, pleasure-seeking love of his younger brother Paris. Because of his honorable character, he is respected by both armies, and manages to maintain his integrity throughout the film. Though there were objectionable elements in this film, it was nice to see an admirable, decent man who loved his family glorified in a film like this for once. Neutral—I was actually afraid that there would be too much nudity, but fortunately there wasn’t much of anything you could see other than a couple of rear shots. All of the sexual scenes were brief, although of course that doesn’t make them harmless. What was really interesting about this story is how senseless so much of it seems on the surface… yet in reality, these kinds of bad decisions happen behind subtle guises all the time in the real world. Maybe in our own day-to-day lives we don’t see whole cities being ravaged as a consequence, but harm still results. I also found it interesting that although there were numerous references to the gods, the filmmakers chose against portraying anything supernatural in the film (e.g. the appearance of any of these gods). I was interested in seeing the film to learn more about the story of the Iliad, and even though it did stray from the original, I found it interesting nevertheless. Believe it or not, watching this epic story and these nearly superhuman warriors led me to some great reflection upon the vast power of God and how our human hearts’ longing for these big characters and events is met in the person and actions of God.

What would I do without your smart mouth? Drawing me in, and you kicking me out Got my head spinning, no kidding I can’t pin you down What’s going on in that beautiful mind? I’m your magical mystery ride And I’m so dizzy, don’t know what hit me, but I’ll be alright My head’s under water But I’m breathing fine You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind ‘Cause all of me Loves all of you Love your curves and all your edges All your perfect imperfections Give your all to me I’ll give my all to you You’re my end and my beginning Even when I lose I’m winning ‘Cause I give you all of me And you give me all of you How many times do I have to tell you Even when you’re crying you’re beautiful too? The world is beating you down, I’m around through every move You’re my downfall, you’re my muse My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues I can’t stop singing, It’s ringing in my head for you My head’s under water But I’m breathing fine You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind ‘Cause all of me Loves all of you Love your curves and all your edges All your perfect imperfections Give your all to me I’ll give my all to you You’re my end and my beginning Even when I lose I’m winning ‘Cause I give you all of me And you give me all of you Cards on the table, we’re both showing hearts Risking it all, though it’s hard ‘Cause all of me Loves all of you Love your curves and all your edges All your perfect imperfections Give your all to me I’ll give my all to you You’re my end and my beginning Even when I lose I’m winning ‘Cause I give you all of me And you give me all of you I give you all of me And you give me all of you

When I remember the days that saw my early childhood spent on the green shores of a murmurous lagoon; when I remember the coolness, delicious and refreshing, that on my face I felt as I heard Favonius croon; when I behold the white lily swell to the wind’s impulsion, and that tempestuous element meekly asleep on the sand; when I inhale the dear intoxicating essence the flowers exude when dawn is smiling on the land; sadly, sadly I recall your visage, precious childhood, which an affectionate mother made beautiful and bright; I recall a simple town, my comfort, joy and cradle, beside a balmy lake, the seat of my delight. Ah, yes, my awkward foot explored your sombre woodlands, and on the banks of your rivers in frolic I took part. I prayed in your rustic temple, a child, with a child’s devotion; and your unsullied breeze exhilarated my heart. The Creator I saw in the grandeur of your age-old forests; upon your bosom, sorrows were ever unknown to me; while at your azure skies I gazed, neither love nor tenderness failed me, for in nature lay my felicity. Tender childhood, beautiful town, rich fountain of rejoicing and of harmonious music that drove away all pain: return to this heart of mine, return my gracious hours, return as the birds return when flowers spring again! But O goodbye! May the Spirit of Good, a loving gift-giver, keep watch eternally over your peace, your joy, your sleep! For you, my fervent pryers; for you, my constant desire to learn; and I pray heaven your innocence to keep! Jose Rizal

The Royal Library of Ashurbanipal, named after Ashurbanipal, the last great king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, is a collection of thousands of clay tablets and fragments containing texts of all kinds from the 7th century BC. Among its holdings was the famous Epic of Gilgamesh. Due to the sloppy handling of the original material much of the library is irreparably jumbled, making it impossible for scholars to discern and reconstruct many of the original texts, although some have survived intact.
