Lathes were developed as early as the 15th century and were known as "bow" lathes. The operator rotated the workpiece by drawing a bow back and forth, either by hand or with the use of a foot treadle. Next came Bessons lathe in 1568, which was driven by a cord passing over a pulley above the machine. This in turn drove two other pulleys on the same shaft which rotated the workpiece and a crude, wooden lead screw, which in turn allowed the operator to remove metal from the piece being machined. The screw cutting lathe originates in the 17th century. Development and advancements have continued and today we have sophisticated computerized controlled lathes. Lathes have allowed man to reshape, machine and manufacture many precision cylindrical components made of various types of metal, wood, plastics, and other materials. Without the lathe, man would still be trying to produce cylindrical components

The transitional hydrosphere The nature of the rock record from the time of the first sedimentary rocks (approximately 3.8 billion years ago) to about one to two billion years ago suggests that the amount of oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere was significantly lower than it is today and that there were continuous chemical trends in the sedimentary rocks formed and, more subtly, in the composition of the hydrosphere. The chemistry of rocks shifted dramatically during this transitional period. The source rocks of sediments during this time may have been more basaltic than subsequent ones. Sedimentary debris was formed by the alteration of such source rocks in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere and accumulated primarily under anaerobic marine conditions.

• Proteomics is the large-scale study of proteins, usually by biochemical methods. The word proteomics has been associated traditionally with displaying a large number of proteins from a given cell line or organism on two -dimensional polyacrylamide gels • In the 1990s, biological mass spectrometry emerged as a powerful analytical method that removed most of the limitations of protein analysis • This development, coupled with the availability of the entire human coding sequence in public databases. Today, the term proteomics covers much of the functional analysis of gene products or ‘functional genomics’, including large-scale identification or localization studies of proteins and interaction studies using the yeast two-hybrid system.
