“magal touba” ,one of the golden days of mouridism , is the annual commemoration of cheikh ahmadou bamba ‘s departure for exile to gabon in 1985 (18 safar in the muslim calendar ).this event takes place each eighteen” safar”; and mourids celebrate it all over the world .this blessed day is consecrated to performing a threefold activity :reciting the holy quran , khassidas (writings of cheikh ahmadou bamba) bestowing generous hospitality to guests and preparing significant conferences and talks which tackle issues such as importance of this day ,the founder of mouridism and the latter’ s participation in the development of our country ,senegal . one might ask the following question : who is this great sufi man ,whose name chimes all over the world?! .in an attempt to answer this ,i would say that he is sheikh ahmadou bamba , most known as khadimoul rassoul or borom touba who was born in 1853 or in 1854 in “mbacke baol” .his father , “mame mor anta sali “ was a great scholar and a teacher of the holy quran and islamic sciences . his mother ,mame diaratoulah , (the neigbour of god) was a pious and devout woman .this cheikh is the founder of mouridism in 1853 in the aim of renovating and reviving islam as he said in his writings “the only religion that is recognized by god is islam , and my only purpose is renovating it “ . for this reason , the french powers felt that they started losing ground for this great cheikh whose followers kept increasing day by day ,which again made them think that he was preparing to wage a war against them ; therefore they accused him of gathering weapons and an army to fight against them . he responded to them in one of his “khassidas “ (poems) whose general content is that he is fighting against them but by means of knowledge , spiritual education ,and piety( fearing god ) . however, french colonists were not convinced by bamba ‘s claim but instead felt threatened and then they decided to send him in exile to gabon ,which is the day celebrated by mourids all over the world . so , he spent thirty three years in the hands of the french colonists : exile to gabon for seven years , then to mauritania for five years and finally put in a house arrest in diourbel , senegal for fifteen years . despite all he went through during this period ; this outstanding and venerable sheikh never stopped defending the prophet ‘s message through his teachings , virtues and good manners until his passing away in 1927 . one of the most striking aspect of his call, mouridism was his peaceful jihad which was especially at that time the most effective weapon to confront the colonists . khadimoul rassoul was very peaceful , tolerant and very forgiving . an example of his tolerance and forgiveness can be summed up into the following : he said in one of his poems “i forgave all my enemies for the sake of god who protected me from them forever” . another important aspect of this doctrine is the concept of founding cities . ahmadou bamba founded many cities and ordered his first disciples to adopt the same policy for the sole purpose of educating and teaching . examples of cities are numerous, but let us take the greatest and holly city “touba” that he founded in 1887, a city that stands for the cradle of knowledge , spiritual education ,and spot of meditation for all mourids . successfully, this city has become the second largest city in senegal and one of the holiest cities in the islamic world . in general terms , “the great magal of touba “ , a celebration of bamba ‘s departure to exile marks a milestone event in the brotherhood ,mouridism . for it was a recommendation from the cheikh to commemorate it by thanking god, the almighty on his behalf , reciting the holy quran and khasaidas . the cheikh promised blessing and grace to his disciples who follow his recommendations that are no more than those of allah and his prophet peace be upon him . so, the “great magal “ , annual festival of an indigenous senegalese muslim brotherhood, the mourides takes place in touba, the holy city of this religious order and wherever this community ,might be around the globe .this event is viewed as an expression of the mourides' popular culture and piety. the meaning of the event both within broader senegalese society and in respect to the state is of paramount importance . for example, the state has recently made it a national holiday due to its economic participation to the development of the country .
