Ad ovest si apre un presbiterio e quindi un'abside semicircolare. A sinistra dell'abside si apre una navatella divisa da tre arcate dall'invaso centrale e sul fondo di essa si nota un sistema per poter convogliare l'acqua che scorreva da una sorgente situata nelle immediate vicinanze. A destra dell'abside si apre un vano di forma irregolare con grandi nicche destinate a contenere arredi sacri e quindi due ambienti contigui collegati da un ambulacro con sulle pareti tracce di pittura. Poco distante, verso sud, la Grotta dei Santi di Castelluccio rappresenta uno dei più significativi oratori rupestri della zona.

La Romana, dal nome della famiglia che la coltivò nelle campagne avolesi diffondendola nel resto del territorio, è la varietà che da i frutti migliori dal punto di vista organolettico, ma scarsamente apprezzata dal mercato a causa della forma tozza e irregolare, e con una percentuale di gemellarità elevata. La Pizzuta d'Avola, con il seme piatto e regolare, è la mandorla eletta dall'industria confettiera.
