Every January during school holidays, Joan Tamutambo who works with Kaweri Coffee Group in Mubende District, usually hosts children of her family and friends on the farm for a period of one to two weeks. During their stay, the children visit the coffee plantations and the factory. They are taken on a guided tour of the processing process of coffee. Ms Tamutambo does this unaware that she is promoting a new emerging form of tourism called agro-tourism. According to the Inter-America Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), agro-tourism is “any activity, enterprise or business that links agriculture with products, services and experiences in tourism”. Agro-tourism is also a way of sustainable tourist development and multi-activity in rural areas through which the visitors have the opportunity to learn about the agricultural areas, agricultural occupations, local products, traditional food and the daily life of the rural people, as well as the cultural elements and traditions. It involves a native farmer or any other person of an area, offering tours to their agricultural farm to allow visitors view the growing, harvesting and processing of locally grown foods such as matoke, pineapple, coffee, sugarcane, etc., or other agriculture produce the visitor would not encounter in their home, city or country. Agro-tourism is increasingly gaining ground as an alternative source of income for rural communities, at the same time protecting the environment. We all know that tourism is well recognised as an engine of economic growth. It has great capacity to generate employment and offer alternative sources of income to rural communities. The concept of traditional tourism is, however, changing. New forms of tourism have emerged ie agro-tourism. Many farm owners out there are not aware of the enormous benefits that accrue from agro-tourism. This activity can be established by an individual farmer, agricultural cooperative institute, farmer organisation or NGO agriculture support agency, as long as they have something unique to showcase to visitors. If well promoted and packaged, this venture can offer an alternative sources of income from sale of local food, crafts and experiences such as contact with wildlife, visits to exceptional landscapes and also learning about products and animals. This form of tourism also works well not only for international tourists, but also for the locals. With increased urbanisation and its associated features where families are being raised in secluded and nuclear homes with high-perimeter wall fences, members of such families don’t have the chance to be close to nature and rural activities in which they can participate, be entertained or tour. Agro-tourism will, therefore, go a long way in creating employment opportunities to farmers and the respective communities. Agro-tourism also helps in cultural transformation between the urban and rural people, including promoting social moral values. The rural farmer communities practicing agro-tourism can also improve their standard of living due to the contacts established with the visitors. The incomes from this venture can be used to construct social amenities like clinics, toilets, water sources, among others. The visitors, especially those from urban areas, are able to understand and appreciate rural life and also learn about the agricultural activities that they only read about. This can also in satisfy the curiosity of tourists, especially those from urban areas, about sources of food, plants, animals and industrial agro-raw materials. Agro-tourism also provides opportunity for education through experiences of farming and knowledge about rural life, including entertainment. It acts as an instrument of urban connectivity through tours. This new form of tourism also reduces the burden or over reliance on the traditional tourist centres such as national parks, cultural sites, among others. If well marketed, farm family members who are well trained in customer care and hospitality will have a clear understanding of what customers want and their expectations. This will help them develop different agro-tour packages for different tourists - an activity that has potential to uplift rural communities. This is one sure way of offering rural communities a sustainable source of income so that they don’t have to resort to using land for mining or to abandon their farmland and relocate to urban areas to find employment. Agri-business support agencies-- private or public-- are encouraged to support this innovative activity by way of helping in the improvement of basic services in the agro-tourism sites such as sanitation and water, better infrastructure, and also help in the promotion and marketing of the activity.
