the documentary is from the i-witness, one of the programs in the philippines where they show documentaries about different events in the philippines. the title of the one that i am writing about is “walang maiiwan” which means “no one gets left behind” in english. the documentary was made by kara david, a filipina journalist and television host. in this documentary, it displayed the struggle of filipino children going to school in san guillermo, isabela. through this documentary, i realized that there are students that are not privileged in their social status but continue to pursue learning. the school’s name is burgos east elementary school which has a high dropout rate. in this school, many students travel from far away to study. i believe our country is falling short in terms of giving proper access to education. that is what i first thought for the first few minutes of the documentary. they cross rivers and walk up steep roads for hours so they can attend their classes. in this part, i saw their passion for studying. our country is capable of improving our industries, businesses, and other platforms, but the opposite when it comes to access to education for everyone. i think the department of education and the government should improve the access more rather than the provision of school materials or donations. there were other students mentioned in the documentary that dropped out of their school because they need to work for their families. one of them was named aquino, who was required to work because his siblings did not want to. i felt heartbroken by the sacrifices they had to make. these students who are around 7-10 years old are dropping out to provide for their families. it made me realize how privileged i am that i should not use it for my benefit but to one day help these students and develop a better place for them. deep down they want to study, but they can’t. and that makes me heartbroken. i believe our country is falling short in terms of giving proper access to education. that is what i first thought for the first few minutes of the documentary. the fact that they want to study but because they are not privileged enough hinders them from learning. poverty in our country is greatly affecting the education of young people. they drop out because they need to survive. in my opinion, the reason why is that this country has not only limited access to education but limited access to opportunities for people to be employed. especially those people in poverty. i do not think they are poor because it is their fault. they are poor because society made a world where the rich are successful, and the poor are failures, deprived of any privilege, from education to justice. i cannot deny that our country is fighting poverty for a long time. it shows in education. the documentary was filmed in 2016, but it is still happening now. department of education believes that there should be no student left behind. from what i understood in the documentary that deped themselves are letting it happen. teachers are going through their way to take the extra mile to encourage their students to study. mr. jun (one of the teachers of burgos east elementary school) even went to his student’s houses. i am not convinced that deped cares for its students. if they do, why is the dropout rate so high? and why is it not going down? we are advancing in terms of technology, equipment, and information. why not use it to create a solution for these students that want to study so they can give their family a bright future? in conclusion, students who are in poverty struggle in accessing quality education not because of their social status but because of the incompetence of the authorities to give them quality education despite their situation. the documentary focused on the resilience of the students in learning or going to school. but i believe there is more than that. it opened my eyes that there are students who go through a lot to study, just because of their social status! if you are reading this. i challenge you to do good in school because there are so many people who want to be in your shoes. make a better place for them to be successful and break free from poverty.
i'm visiting
