I do not think that the European Union is the modern version of Hobbes's Leviathan; it is simply an institution that embodies principles of solidarity and of subsidiarity, defends human rights, and is committed to safeguarding the social market economy, and the market itself is an instrument for creating social policy; so there is nothing here that is trying to limit anybody's freedom, we are simply defending the rights of half a billion European citizens who live within our Union.

Io non credo che l'Unione europea sia il moderno Leviatano di Hobbes, è soltanto un'istituzione che si riconosce nei principi di solidarietà, di sussidiarietà, che difende i diritti umani, che è impegnata a tutelare l'economia sociale di mercato e il mercato è uno strumento per fare una politica sociale, quindi nessuna azione che voglia conculcare la libertà di chicchessia ma soltanto difendere i diritti di mezzo miliardo di cittadini Europai che vivono all'interno della nostra Unione.
