A pobreza está estreitamente ligada às questões ambientais. Os mais pobres são, simultaneamente, para a sua sobrevivência, os mais dependentes dos recursos naturais, que frequentemente são obrigados a explorar excessivamente, e os mais afectados pela degradação do ambiente. O desenvolvimento sustentável destina-se igualmente a assegurar a equidade intergeracional através de uma gestão dos recursos que tenha em conta as gerações futuras. Para atingir os ODM, é essencial assegurar uma gestão sustentável dos recursos naturais, combater as alterações climáticas, o desflorestamento e a desertificação e travar a perda de biodiversidade.

Poverty is closely linked to environmental issues. The poorest people are the most dependent on natural resources for survival, which they are often forced to over-exploit. They are also the worst affected by a degraded environment. Sustainable development aims to ensure intergenerational equality via resource management that takes account of future generations. Ensuring sustainable management of natural resources, combating climatic change, deforestation and desertification and halting biodiversity loss are essential for achieving the MDGs.

O efeito destruidor do furacão Mitch foi favorecido pelo desflorestamento e pela inexistência de um sistema adequado de controlo de inundações, ficando mais uma vez demonstrado que a degradação ambiental afecta de forma desproporcionada as camadas mais pobres e provando ­ se a relação intrínseca entre pobreza e deterioração ambiental.

Penso que estamos aqui para tentar fornecer algumas respostas e sobretudo para poder dialogar com a Comissão sobre um assunto tão importante, que diz respeito ao desequilíbrio dos recursos hídricos no território europeu, desequilíbrio este que está ligado às diferentes situações geográficas, geológicas, climáticas, mas ligado também ao resultado da actividade humana: urbanização, desflorestamento e poluição.

I think that we are here to try to provide some answers and, more importantly, to be able to discuss with the Commission a particularly important subject, which is the uneven distribution of water resources on European territory, which is related to variations in geographical, geological and climatic conditions, but which also results from human activity such as urbanisation, deforestation and pollution.
