first of all, what do we see? a very beautiful face seems to be covered by an elegant veil, but on second glance we see it is veiled by flies; the serpents of a medusa head seem to attack their host rather than petrifying others, and certain static daphnes, tree branches densely sprouting from their body, are pursued by no apollo. heads can be seen amidst the roots of trees, the roots forming their hair or imprisoning the entire nude body, as in the case of a reclining figure. a sculpted head, with mouth closed and an absent gaze, is studded with identical little heads whose mouths, however, are open. kraijer’s characters are seen, therefore, in a state of metamorphosis (and the allusions to classical figures, figures of myth, capture a courtly, literary origin of that which is spurious), in the moment in which they undergo a mutation.
cosa vediamo, innanzitutto? un bellissimo volto ci sembra coperto da una elegante veletta ma ad un secondo sguardo si rivela costellato di mosche; i serpenti di una testa di medusa sembrano avventarsi contro la loro portatrice anziché pietrificare gli estranei, e alcune dafne statiche, dal cui corpo nudo spuntano fitte le fronde di un albero, non vengono inseguite da nessun apollo. alcune teste ci si mostrano fra le radici di alberi che fanno loro da capigliatura, quando non ne imprigionano l’intero corpo nudo come succede ad una figura distesa. una testa scolpita, bocca chiusa e sguardo assente, è invece costellata di piccole teste identiche, però a bocca spalancata. i personaggi di kraijer vengono dunque ritratti in metamorfosi (e le allusioni a figure classiche, figure del mito, colgono un’origine aulica, letteraria, di ciò che è spurio), nel momento in cui subiscono una mutazione.
