English

a 50 year-old male supervisor in a fruit packing plant sustained a compound fracture of the right forearm after his arm got caught in a conveyor belt roller. one of the supervisor’s responsibilities was to start the conveyor lines prior to the packing crews arriving at 7:30 a.m. when he arrived to work at 7:00 a.m., he started several conveyors to ensure they were operating correctly. one conveyor system had a section where leaves and twigs accumulated from the previous day’s processing of fruit. to ensure this would not cause any problems during the day, he went to this section of the conveyor to clean it. as he reached in to clear the debris, his right arm was caught between the running conveyor belt and an unpowered roller. the “nip point” caught the supervisor’s clothing, pulling his arm around the rotating roller. the supervisor cannot recall how his arm got caught in the roller. unfortunately, no safety guard was in place at the time of the injury. fellow employees, hearing his screams, turned the machine off and cut the conveyor belt to extract his arm. the supervisor underwent emergency surgery to install plates in his forearm to help the bones heal. it’s expected to take over a year for his arm to heal so he can return to his normal job.
