the eu is a global leader in giving aid to the poorest people of the world. it is hard to imagine, that at the same time the community could stop helping those of its own citizens who are facing serious problems, and therefore i hope that the council will come to an understanding on this matter.

agenda unijnego szczytu w brukseli w czerwcu 2008 roku nie w pełni ilustruje rzeczywiste wyzwania obecnego czasu. niepokoje społeczne w wielu krajach powodowane drożyzną nośników energii i żywności powinny być ostrzeżeniem dla przywódców unii europejskiej, przejętych porażką traktatu lizbońskiego w irlandii. trzeba znaleźć odpowiedź na dzisiejsze niepokoje mieszkańców europy, tak wyraźnie manifestowane na ulicach wielu miast, także w brukseli. nie jest wystarczającą odpowiedzią wyznaczenie ambitnych planów w zakresie energii odnawialnej i ochrony środowiska. mogą one powodować dodatkowe koszty i pogorszenie sytuacji konkurencyjnej europy na globalnym rynku. mogą wzniecać niepokoje, zamiast je uśmierzać.
the agenda for the eu summit in brussels in june 2008 does not altogether reflect the real challenges currently facing the union. social unrest in many countries caused by the high costs of energy and food should act as a warning to the leaders of the european union who are preoccupied by the rejection of the lisbon treaty in ireland. we have to find answers to the concerns that european citizens have today, which have been shown clearly on the streets of many cities, including brussels. it is not enough to set out ambitious plans for renewable energy and environmental protection. these may in fact result in additional costs and a worsening of europe’s competitiveness in world markets. they may increase unrest rather than reduce it.
