སྙན་ཚིག་གི་རིག་བྱེད་དང་།
the sāmaveda,

གདམས་ངག་བྱིན་ནས་དེས་བརྩོན་པ་དང་།
the monk gave him instructions.

དེ་ནས་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་ཀྱིས་དེ་དག་ལ་གདམས་ངག་སྩལ་ནས།
the blessed one gave them instructions,

དེས་བསམས་པ། འདི་ནི་དགེ་སློང་གནས་བརྟན་འགའ་ཞིག་ཡིན་གོར་མ་ཆག་སྙན་ནས་
upananda thought, “no doubt this is one of our elder monks.” going out to greet him,

ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་ཁྱིམ་དུ་མི་སྙན་པ་གྲགས་པར་གྱུར་ན་མི་རུང་གིས་དེ་ལྟ་མ་བྱེད་ཅིག །
“it’s not right to bring ill repute upon your family, so do not behave like this.”

དེས་དུས་དང་དུས་སུ་གདམས་ངག་དང་རྗེས་སུ་བསྟན་པ་མ་ཐོབ་ནས་བསླབ་པ་ཕུལ་ཏེ་ཉམས་པར་གྱུར་པའི་སྐབས་དེ་
but, not having received counsel or instruction at any time, the convert offered back his training and fell away,

ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་ངག་གི་ལས་རྩུབ་པོ་བརྗོད་ཀྱིས་སྡིག་པ་སྡིག་པ་ལས་ཤོགས་ཤིག་དང་། །
as you have spoken harshly, you must confess your wrongs as wrong!

དེ་ཕྱོགས་དང་ཡུལ་ཐ་དད་པ་ན་འཁོད་པས་དགེ་སློང་དག་གནས་ཤིང་དེའི་གདམས་ངག་གིས་མང་པོ་དག་གིས་དགྲ་བཅོམ་པ་ཉིད་མངོན་དུ་བྱས་སོ། །
where monks from various regions and lands came to live, many of whom went on to actualize arhatship under his guidance.

ཤེས་ལྡན་དག་ཡུལ་དབུས་ན་བདག་ཅག་གི་མཁན་པོས་གང་དག་གི་གདོང་དུ་ལྟ་བར་ཡང་མི་ནུས་པ་སྙན་པར་སྨྲ་བ། སྨྲ་བའི་ཁྱུ་མཆོག་དེ་ལྟ་བུ་དག་ཡོད་དོ།
“gentlemen, in the middle country, the philosophers are such that our teacher could not even look them in the face, so eloquently do they speak, so wise are they.”
