im rahmen ihrer promotion (2000-2003) am lehrstuhl für stoffwechselbiochemie unter der leitung von prof. haass untersuchte sie die katalytischen spezifitäten der beiden aspartylproteasen bace-1 (ß-site app cleaving enzyme) und bace-2. bace-1 ist maßgeblich an der generation des amyloid-ß-peptids beteiligt und ein schlüsselfaktor in der entstehung der alzheimer krankheit. als postdoktorandin (2003-2005) begann prof. dr. fluhrer sich zunehmend für intramembranproteasen zu interessieren und konnte zeigen, dass die γ-sekretase, ein weiteres wichtiges enzym, welches zur entstehung der alzheimer erkrankung beiträgt, außerdem eine funktion im rahmen des programmierten zelltodes (apoptose) hat.
for her ph.d. studies (2000 – 2003) she joined the laboratory of christian haass and intensively worked on the catalytic specificities of bace-1 (β-site app cleaving enzyme) and bace-2. bace-1 is one of the key players involved in the generation of the amyloid-β-peptide (aβ) and a major factor in the development of alzheimer’s disease. during her time as a postdoctoral fellow (2003-2005) prof. fluhrer became more and more interested in intramembrane proteases and was able to show that γ-secretase, the other key player involved in the generation of the amyloid-β-peptide (aβ), has an additional function in apoptosis.
