furthermore, the purpose of this study is to discover certain changes or impacts of cultural trends in the lives of the respondents in our country. the researchers believe that the open ended questionnaire is more suitable for this research because it does not provide participants with a predetermined set of answer choices, instead, allowing the respondents to provide responses in their own words, knowledge, emotions, and understanding.

chapter 2 methodology research design the study will use the qualitative method with a phenomenological research design to explore the experiences of student-athletes who are involved in romantic relationships with fellow student-athletes. in phenomenological design of inquiry, lived experiences of the same phenomenon by a group of individuals are described to understand the reality from the participants' perspective (creswell & cresswell, 2018). the researchers will use a phenomenological approach in this study as it is suitable in understanding the participants’ experiences with their romantic relationships whilst being student-athletes. this approach will also highlight the interpretation of the commonality in the behaviors of the individuals who are under similar experiences. sources of data (materials and procedures) the researchers will utilize the method of purposive sampling to determine the individuals to be selected to participate in the study. as defined by hassan (2024), purposive sampling is a non-probability sampling technique used to select the participating individuals based on their specific characteristics that meet the required criteria relevant to the research objectives. it is also known as judgemental sampling because the selection of participants will solely rely on the subjective judgement of the researchers in identifying individuals who possess traits that could provide the information required to fill the research gap. purposive sampling is the most appropriate for this study as it gives the researchers the opportunity to select individuals who they think have deep relevance to the topic and could best give answers that would satisfy the research questions. instrumentation and data collection the instrument that the researchers will utilize in gathering data for the study is a semi-structured interview. doyle (2022) defines semi-structured interview as a type of interview that does not necessarily follow a formalized list of questions. it usually contains open-ended questions that would only serve as the outline of the general topics addressed to guide the conversation. semi-structured interview is appropriate to use for this research because it allows the participants to share their lived experiences in their most free and casual state while still maintaining the relevance of their answers to the topic to provide valuable insights for the researchers. analysis of data this research will use a subject-centered method to carefully understand the data set through the use of interpretative phenomenological analysis (ipa). interpretative phenomenological analysis is a psychological qualitative research design used to understand participants’ subjective realities through personal interpretations of their lived experiences and the meanings they attach to these experiences (smith & nizza, 2021). interpretative phenomenological analysis is suited for this research because it will help dig in and describe the romantic experiences of student-athletes in rich detail to identify common themes that will come from interviews, making it easy to understand and organize the data to be gathered.
