but they are succeeded by a generation who neglect their devotional obligations and follow only earthly pleasures; but they will reach the wrong road and meet destruction,

whose hearts are filled with awe when the name of god is mentioned before them, who endure with fortitude what befalls them, and fulfil their moral obligations, and expend of what we have given them.

alms are only for: the poor and the destitute, for those who collect zakat, for conciliating people's hearts, for freeing slaves, for those in debt, for spending for god's cause, and for travellers in need. it is a legal obligation enjoined by god. god is all-knowing and wise.
