der ort ist sehr alt. emanuele repetti beschreibt in seinem geografischen wörterbuch über die toskana aus dem jahre 1839 „am 09. april 970 gibt der bischof adolongo für die pfarrkirche sankt martin, die an dem ort flexo liegt, einen jährlichen beitrag von 15 silbermünzen an ildebrando“. ursprünglich trug die pfarrkirche von montuolo den namen sankt martin, heute trägt sie den namen san giovanni battista. der ort wurde aufgrund einer flussbiegung des ursprünglichen flussverlaufes des serchios „flexo“ genannt.
