Crawford - Back to Table of Contents Observation Schedule An observation schedule is typically a checklist or rating scale where the occurrences of particular, pre-identified events or features can be noted. This method is useful to gather information about particular physical behaviors. It provides an opportunity to collect information directly about what is actually occurring within the natural settings. It yields very objective information. The more structured the schedule, the easier to summarize and analyze data. This method has some limitations when one needs to gather information about people. The evaluator has less control over the situation in a natural environment. If the group is aware of being observed, behavior may be affected-- which is known as "Hawthorne effect." Different observers may not record events consistently. If the evaluator chooses to be involved in the activity, he or she may lose objectivity. Back to Table of Contents Case Study It can provide in depth information on a single unit, group or organization-- through personal discussion, mutual interaction, observation, or review of existing documents. The evaluator captures the total scene of the situation. Yin (1984) describes case studies as either explanatory, descriptive, or exploratory. With an explanatory purpose, a case study is designed to test and explain causal links in real-life programs whose complexity cannot be captured by a survey. For descriptive purposes, a case study can be used to describe the real-life context where a program takes place. Finally, a case study can be exploratory-- if a program has no clear set of outcomes, it can help identify performance measures or pose hypotheses for further evaluative work. Case study has several advantages. It allows depth of insight into relationships and personal feelings; the information can be effectively used in combination with other methods such as survey and observation; and it can be tailored to a specific situation. The major disadvantage of case study is the subjectivity of information. People sometime question on the evaluator's bias. In addition, it is time consuming. It requires extensive amounts of data. The findings cannot necessarily be generalized to a larger community as it focuses on a limited number of cases. Back to Table of Contents Key Informants It is based on obtaining information, over time, from a community resident who is in a position to know a community well. Key informants in a community may include school superintendents, Extension educators, local leaders, Church officials, local business leaders, and members of service clubs such as Lions, Kiwanis, or Optimist International. These people could provide fairly representative information on how a program or project is serving its intended beneficiaries. The evaluator should, however, recognize the limitations of this approach that it does not use random selection of subjects and thus, is subject to information bias and representativeness. Mango Tree, Indian Trees Mango Tree is one of the best known and most popular trees of India. The scientific name of Mango tree is Mangifera Indica. Mango tree bears some very large and tasty fruits. There are several names of this popular tree in the different languages of the country. Both in Bengali language and Hindi language, it is popularly known as Aam. In Telugu language, Mango is known as Mamid or Mamada; and the Tamil people know it as Mangas or Ma. A native to India, mango tree is popularly found in almost all the tropical countries. Though Mango tree does not have scented flowers, still the tree can be identified by its leaves, bark and the shape. The tree can retain its leaves all round the year. Generally, this tree spreads to a great extent to surplus its height. Interestingly, the wind cannot break the tough and bouncy stalks of the leaves of Mango tree easily. Structure of Mango Tree Mango tree can grow upto almost 120-130 ft in height, with a radius of 33 ft at the top. The root of the mango tree goes down to around 20 ft, in deep soil. The roots are usually plentiful and wide-spreading. The evergreen leaves of the mango tree contain a specific aroma and are almost 15-35 cm in length and 6-16 cm in width. In the initial stages, the leaves are orange coloured, but turn dark red and eventually dark green as the leaves mature. Flowering takes place generally in between January to March. The flowers have 4 or 5 petals and are 5-10 mm in length. The mango flowers are yellow-greenish in colour. The petals have orange stripes on them. Amongst the thousands of flowers that appear in the tree, only a few have the ability to produce fruits. The stems of the tree are fat, green in colour and wavy. They can bear numerous retreating side stems. Each of these stems has a lot of little and stalked flowers. Fruit of Mango Tree The Mango fruit takes 2 to 3 months to get matured and they vary from one tree to another. The normal fruiting period of the Mango tree is from the month of May to July, but one can obtain fruit from them almost every month of the year. The tree has some varieties that produce fruits twice and even three times in every 12 months. The Mangoes can be of different weights. Starting from 170 gm to 1.4 kg, the fruit has a tough and thin skin that can be of green or yellow or red in colour. They contain luscious flesh that is creamy white, yellow or deep salmon in colour. Sometimes the flesh is like fibres and sometimes it is very smooth. Mango Tree, Indian Trees Usage of Mango Tree Apart from the delicacy of the fruit, the tree has some other valuable properties as well. The timber of Mango tree is quite soft and durable and thus very good for planking and making packing cases and tea boxes. The bark can produce a gum that is used in medicine. The immature fruit can also be used, as a treat to Ophthalmia and some people believe that a tonic prepared from the ripe fruit, is good for the liver. Not only these, various parts of the tree are used to stop bleeding and prescribed in cases of snakebite and scorpion-sting as well. Religious Significance of Mango Tree In Hindu religion, mango tree holds a lot of religious importance. To the Hindus, it is an alteration of the God Prajapati, the Lord of all creatures. Further, the rooms in which marriage ceremonies are held are festooned with Mango leaves. The wood is also considered as sacred because it is included in funeral pyres. It is also depicted that a ripe Mango fruit is held by Lord Ganesha. The Hindus also dedicate the flowers of the tree to the Moon on the second day of the Bengali month, Magha. Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa Born: February 18, 1836 Passed Away: 16, August, 1886 Contributions Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa was a popular saint of India. He had a strong faith in the existence of god. He regarded every woman of the society, including his wife, Sarada, as holy mother. Swami Vivekananda was one of the prominent disciples of Ramakrishna, who later formed the Ramakrishna Mission. Life The original name of Ramakrishna Paramhansa was Gadadhar Chattopadhyay. He was born into a poor and orthodox Brahmin family on 18 February, 1836 in Kamarpukur, Hooghly district of West Bengal. His parents were Khudiram Chattopadhyaya, and Chandramani Devi. Though Gadadhar was very reluctant going to school, he had a god-gifted ability of painting and creating clay models. He was also good at learning things. He easily mastered the tales, based upon the religion. Young Gadadhar loved the nature so much that he used to spend much of his time in orchards and on the river-banks. After the death of his father in 1843, the responsibilities of the family were handled by his elder brother Ramkumar. Ramkumar left home for Calcutta and started teaching Sanskrit in a local school. Ramkumar also served as a priest at different socio-religious functions. Young Gadadhar, back in his village started performing regular worshipping of their family-deity. Ramkrishna at Dakshineswar Few months later, Ramkumar was invited to Dakshineswar temple by Rani Rasmoni, the founder of the temple. Ramkumar was appointed as the chief-priest of the temple. In 1852, Ramakrishna went to Calcutta and started assisting his brother at the same temple. In 1856, after the death of Ramkumar, Ramakrishna took his place as the chief-priest of the Kali temple. It is believed that the name Ramakrishna was given to Gadadhar by the son-in-law of Rani Rasmoni. After being given more responsibilities, Ramkrishna began to spend much time in the "Thakur-Ghar" (home of the deity). He considered Goddess Kali as the mother of all. He wanted to see the glimpse of the god. At times, he would go into the jungle and spend the entire night worshipping goddess Kali. The activities of Ramakrishna were viewed by many as gimmick. Many believed that Ramakrishna has become "mad". With an effort to bring Ramakrishna back into the normal life, her mother began to search for a bride. In 1959, Ramakrishna was married to five year old Sarada. Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa Sri Ramakrishna was the most 'rational mystic'. With scientific precision he put forward in most simple terms, as parables and stories, the eternal truth regarding God and God realization. He talked about God only after directly experiencing the reality of God. To get rid of the thought that he belonged to a higher brahmanical caste, he began to eat food cooked by the shudras or lower-caste. Sarada Devi, Ramakrishna's wife At the age of eighteen, Sarada, the bride of the Ramakrishna, was sent to Dakshineshwar to join her husband. It was believed that the Ramakrishna regarded Sarada as the holy mother. Sarada Devi is considered as the first disciple of Ramakrishna. Even after Ramakrishna's death in 1886, Sarada Devi led the movement and worked hard to make it a success. With Vivekananda Ramakrishna met Vivekananda for the first time in November 1881 when Vivekananda visited Dakshineswar to know if the god really exists. In his reply Ramakrishna said, "Yes, I see God, just as I see you here, only in a much intenser sense. God can be realized," At first Vivekananda did not believe Ramakrishna. He felt, how such a simple man could see the God. But, gradually he started developing faith in Ramkrishna. Few days later, Vivekananda realized that Ramakrishna's words were honest and uttered from a deep experience. Vivekananda started visiting Dakshineswar frequently and a relationship of "Master and disciple" developed between the two. At Death-Bed In 1885 Ramakrishna suffered from throat cancer. In order to consult the best physicians of Calcutta, Ramakrishna was shifted to Shyampukur by his disciples. But with the time, his health started deteriorating and he was taken to a large house at Cossipore. His condition worsened and on 16 August, 1886, he expired at the Cossipore garden house. After the death of Ramakrishna, the monastic disciples formed a fellowship at a half-ruined house at Baranagar, headed by Vivekananda. This was the initial stage of Ramakrishna Mission.

महाराणा प्रताप के बारे में कुछ रोचक जानकारी:- 1... महाराणा प्रताप एक ही झटके में घोड़े समेत दुश्मन सैनिक को काट डालते थे। 2.... जब इब्राहिम लिंकन भारत दौरे पर आ रहे थे । तब उन्होने अपनी माँ से पूछा कि- हिंदुस्तान से आपके लिए क्या लेकर आए ? तब माँ का जवाब मिला- ”उस महान देश की वीर भूमि हल्दी घाटी से एक मुट्ठी धूल लेकर आना, जहाँ का राजा अपनी प्रजा के प्रति इतना वफ़ादार था कि उसने आधे हिंदुस्तान के बदले अपनी मातृभूमि को चुना ।” लेकिन बदकिस्मती से उनका वो दौरा रद्द हो गया था | “बुक ऑफ़ प्रेसिडेंट यु एस ए ‘ किताब में आप यह बात पढ़ सकते हैं | 3.... महाराणा प्रताप के भाले का वजन 80 किलोग्राम था और कवच का वजन भी 80 किलोग्राम ही था| कवच, भाला, ढाल, और हाथ में तलवार का वजन मिलाएं तो कुल वजन 207 किलो था। 4.... आज भी महाराणा प्रताप की तलवार कवच आदि सामान उदयपुर राज घराने के संग्रहालय में सुरक्षित हैं | 5.... अकबर ने कहा था कि अगर राणा प्रताप मेरे सामने झुकते है, तो आधा हिंदुस्तान के वारिस वो होंगे, पर बादशाहत अकबर की ही रहेगी| लेकिन महाराणा प्रताप ने किसी की भी अधीनता स्वीकार करने से मना कर दिया | 6.... हल्दी घाटी की लड़ाई में मेवाड़ से 20000 सैनिक थे और अकबर की ओर से 85000 सैनिक युद्ध में सम्मिलित हुए | 7.... महाराणा प्रताप के घोड़े चेतक का मंदिर भी बना हुआ है, जो आज भी हल्दी घाटी में सुरक्षित है | 8.... महाराणा प्रताप ने जब महलों का त्याग किया तब उनके साथ लुहार जाति के हजारो लोगों ने भी घर छोड़ा और दिन रात राणा कि फौज के लिए तलवारें बनाईं | इसी समाज को आज गुजरात मध्यप्रदेश और राजस्थान में गाढ़िया लोहार कहा जाता है| मैं नमन करता हूँ ऐसे लोगो को | 9.... हल्दी घाटी के युद्ध के 300 साल बाद भी वहाँ जमीनों में तलवारें पाई गई। आखिरी बार तलवारों का जखीरा 1985 में हल्दी घाटी में मिला था | 10..... महाराणा प्रताप को शस्त्रास्त्र की शिक्षा "श्री जैमल मेड़तिया जी" ने दी थी, जो 8000 राजपूत वीरों को लेकर 60000 मुसलमानों से लड़े थे। उस युद्ध में 48000 मारे गए थे । जिनमे 8000 राजपूत और 40000 मुग़ल थे | 11.... महाराणा के देहांत पर अकबर भी रो पड़ा था | 12.... मेवाड़ के आदिवासी भील समाज ने हल्दी घाटी में अकबर की फौज को अपने तीरो से रौंद डाला था । वो महाराणा प्रताप को अपना बेटा मानते थे और राणा बिना भेदभाव के उन के साथ रहते थे । आज भी मेवाड़ के राजचिन्ह पर एक तरफ राजपूत हैं, तो दूसरी तरफ भील | 13..... महाराणा प्रताप का घोड़ा चेतक महाराणा को 26 फीट का दरिया पार करने के बाद वीर गति को प्राप्त हुआ | उसकी एक टांग टूटने के बाद भी वह दरिया पार कर गया। जहाँ वो घायल हुआ वहां आज खोड़ी इमली नाम का पेड़ है, जहाँ पर चेतक की मृत्यु हुई वहाँ चेतक मंदिर है | 14..... राणा का घोड़ा चेतक भी बहुत ताकतवर था उसके मुँह के आगे दुश्मन के हाथियों को भ्रमित करने के लिए हाथी की सूंड लगाई जाती थी । यह हेतक और चेतक नाम के दो घोड़े थे| 15..... मरने से पहले महाराणा प्रताप ने अपना खोया हुआ 85 % मेवाड फिर से जीत लिया था । सोने चांदी और महलो को छोड़कर वो 20 साल मेवाड़ के जंगलो में घूमे । 16.... महाराणा प्रताप का वजन 110 किलो और लम्बाई 7’5” थी, दो म्यान वाली तलवार और 80 किलो का भाला रखते थे हाथ में। महाराणा प्रताप के हाथी की कहानी: मित्रो, आप सब ने महाराणा प्रताप के घोड़े चेतक के बारे में तो सुना ही होगा, लेकिन उनका एक हाथी भी था। जिसका नाम था रामप्रसाद। उसके बारे में आपको कुछ बाते बताता हुँ। रामप्रसाद हाथी का उल्लेख अल- बदायुनी, जो मुगलों की ओर से हल्दीघाटी के युद्ध में लड़ा था ने अपने एक ग्रन्थ में किया है। वो लिखता है की- जब महाराणा प्रताप पर अकबर ने चढाई की थी, तब उसने दो चीजो को ही बंदी बनाने की मांग की थी । एक तो खुद महाराणा और दूसरा उनका हाथी रामप्रसाद। आगे अल बदायुनी लिखता है की- वो हाथी इतना समझदार व ताकतवर था की उसने हल्दीघाटी के युद्ध में अकेले ही अकबर के 13 हाथियों को मार गिराया था । वो आगे लिखता है कि- उस हाथी को पकड़ने के लिए हमने 7 बड़े हाथियों का एक चक्रव्यूह बनाया और उन पर 14 महावतो को बिठाया, तब कहीं जाकर उसे बंदी बना पाये। अब सुनिए एक भारतीय जानवर की स्वामी भक्ति। उस हाथी को अकबर के समक्ष पेश किया गया । जहा अकबर ने उसका नाम पीरप्रसाद रखा। रामप्रसाद को मुगलों ने गन्ने और पानी दिया। पर उस स्वामिभक्त हाथी ने 18 दिन तक मुगलों का न तो दाना खाया और न ही पानी पिया और वो शहीद हो गया। तब अकबर ने कहा था कि- जिसके हाथी को मैं अपने सामने नहीं झुका पाया, उस महाराणा प्रताप को क्या झुका पाउँगा.? इसलिए मित्रो हमेशा अपने भारतीय होने पे गर्व करो।

The dictionary meaning of robot is a mechanical man or a more than humanly efficient automation. It is an automatic apparatus or device that performs functions ascribed to human beings or operates with what appears to be almost human intelligence. But this defamation does not give a human shape to the robot. The robot does the work of a human being. The Robot Institute of America has given a very interesting definition on an Industrial robot. Industrial robots are usually used at industries. "An Industrial robot is a reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move materials, parts, tools or special devices through variable programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks". So, a robot is capable of being reprogrammed. This characteristic distinguishes it from a fixed automation. A fixed automation is designed to do one and only one specific task. If the specification of task changes even slightly the fixed automation becomes incapable of performing the task. It is designed to perform according to one fixed specification. However, a robot can be reprogrammed to perform even when specifications are changed drastically. The original programme is simply erased and the new programme takes care of the changed tasks. This feature that a robot can be reprogrammed makes the robot a flexible device. Hence, manufacturing systems which use robots are called flexible manufacturing system (FMS) due to this flexibility. Karle Capek was the first person to introduce the word 'robot' and Sir Isaac Asimov coined first time the word 'robotics'. According to Asimov, robotics is the science of dealing with robots. Hence robotics involves a scientific study of robots. The study includes design, selections of materials of proper quality for the components, fabrication, study of various motors required for moving the components, design of electronic circuits, computers and computer programming and control of robots. Since robots and robotics are still in the developing stages, a considerable amount of research is being pursued in this line. Depending on the area in which robots are to be used, robotics includes disciplines such as biology, medical science, psychology, agriculture, mining, outer space engineering etc. Mainly two types of robots are there, i.e. fixed robot and mobile robot. The fixed type robot is fixed to a particular location while doing his work with his hands. A mobile robot moves form place to place. Mobility is given to robots by providing wheels or legs or other crawling mechanisms. Basically robot has five major components such as, (a) The Manipulator, (b) The End effectors (c) The Locomotion Device (d) The Controller and (e) The Sensors. In a robot system, all the above five components are interfaced properly so that each component can work in a co-coordinated fashion for the effective and efficient functioning of the robot. In an industrial robot system, a mini computer is being used as the controller. Sensors are measuring instruments that measure quantities such as position, velocity, force, torque, proximity, temperature etc. Applications of Robots: Though robots are used widely in industries but they are also popular in other fields like agriculture, nuclear energy, fire fighting, mining, undersea exploration, space exploration, medical applications etc. (1) Industries: Use of robots in industries are very common because they can offer reduced cost of production, increase productivity, improve production quality, and can operate hazardous and hostile environment. Robots, at industries are classified according to the type of work they perform like Pick- and place robots, point-to-point robots, assembly robots etc. (2) Agriculture: In agriculture, robots are now successfully utilized for fruit picking, potato digging etc. (3) Nuclear energy: Handling of radioactive substances in a nuclear power station is an important work done by robots. This relieves the human beings from doing such hazardous tasks. (4) Fire fighting and mining: Robots can perform hazardous works like fire fighting to extinguish the fire and in mining operations. (5) Udersea exploration: Robot can go dip into the sea of depth 2 to 6 kilometers attached with submarine for deep sea exploration.
