ચીનની વારંવાર યુદ્ધમાં દાખલ થવાની ધમકીને કારણે ભારતે અણુ હથિયારો વિક્સાવવા માટે પગલાં લીધાં. અમેરિકાની વારંવાર ખાતરી છતાં ભારત વિરુદ્ધના યુદ્ધમાં પાકિસ્તાને અમેરિકન બનાવટનાં શસ્ત્રો વાપર્યાં અને તેના કારણે ભારત નારાજ થયું. તે જ સમયે પશ્ચિમી દેશોએ ભારતને આધુનિક હથિયારો આપવા ના કહી જેથી સંબંધો વધુ વણસ્યા. બિનજોડણવાદી દેશોએ પણ મોકાના સમયે સાથ ન આપતાં ભારતે તેની વિદેશનીતિમાં મોટો સુધારો કર્યો અને તે સોવિયત યુનિયનની વધુ નજીક ગયું. તે દાયકાના અંત સુધીમાં સોવિયત યુનિયન ભારતનું શસ્ત્ર આપતું સૌથી મોટું ભાગીદાર બન્યું. ૧૯૬૭થી ૧૯૭૭ સુધી ભારતના ૮૧ ટકા શસ્રો સોવિયત સરકારે આપ્યાં. યુદ્ધ બાદ ભારત અને પાકિસ્તાન વચ્ચેની શસ્ત્રદોડ એકતરફી બની અને ભારતે પાકિસ્તાનને બહુ પાછળ છોડી દીધું.
