في تلك الآيام , تلك الايام التي وجدت لي وحدي أنها بعيدة المنال عن الذاكرة التي في كثير من الآحيان الصوت الآول الذي تسمعه في الصباح يبدوا وكأنه عاصفة من تغريد العصافير , ثم طرق ناعم للحوافر للحصان يشد عربة الحليب بعيدا عن حظيرتك , والصوت الآخير في الليل لايشبه هذا سيكون والدك وهو يجر في سيارته , لديه عمل متأخر مرة أخرى ,دائما متأخر , وتذهب بتثاقل الى القبو , الى الفرن . لتهز الرماد وترطب الجو قبل أن يصعد الطابق العلوي لينسل في سريره-- في هذه الايام في زمن بعيد النساء , أمي , أمهات أصدقائي , جاراتنا , جميع النساء الذين عرفتهم -- يرتدين , في معظم اليوم , ماكان يسمى ملابس منزلية , رخيصة , مطبوعة , وسميكة , على مايبدو تعمد جعلها بشعة القطن الخفيف المتحول الذي ترتدونه في ملابس النوم و , عندما تذهب للبحث على طفل , شنقا يغسل على الخط , أو النزول مسرعا الى البقالة في الزاوية , تحت السترة , والتنحنح الملتوي لملابس النوم دائما باهت وأصفر , تتدلى أسفلها .
