an apparatus for the treatment of fibre material, in particular mineral or glass fibre, has a unit (1) for loosening or opening the fibre material, and a unit (2) for feeding the fibre material to the loosening unit (1). further, the loosening unit (1) includes two adjacent toothed shredding rollers (4, 5) having parallel axes of rotation (4', 5') and opposite directions of rotation (p4, p5). the feeding unit (2) is designed to gradually feed, in a feeding direction, the fibre material in the form of a compacted fibre body (14), especially a pressure-compressed bale, to simultaneous engagement with the teeth (10) of the two shredding rollers (4, 5) on that side of a common diametral plane (pl 1) of the rollers (4, 5) where the latter rotate away from one another. thus, two concave shredding surfaces (20, 21) converging into an apex are formed in the fibre body (14) at the point of engagement (23); these two shredding surfaces (20, 21) being completely or at least substantially located between the diametral planes (pl 2, pl 3) of the shredding rollers (4, 5) that are parallel to the feeding direction.
