la présente invention concerne un procédé permettant de réduire la concentration d'anhydride sulfureux dans un gaz de carneau (1). ce procédé consiste, via deux tours reliées en série, à mettre le gaz de carneau se trouvant dans ces tours avec une solution renfermant un sulfate d'ammonium (13, 22), tel que (nh4)2hpo4, qui réagit avec l'anhydride sulfureux hydraté h2so3 pour produire une solution qui renferme un bisulfate d'ammonium et un composé phosphate protoné tel que nh4h2po4 (12, 6). cette solution renfermant du bisulfate d'ammonium et le composé phosphate protoné (12, 6) sont transferés dans une cuve d'ammonation dans laquelle on injecte de l'ammoniac (7). la solution ammoniaquée (9) est transférée dans une cuve d'oxydation où l'on injecte de l'oxygène (3). l'oxygène et l'ammoniac réagissent avec le bisulfate d'ammonium et produisent du sulfate d'ammonium, qui est évacué (19), cependant que l'oxygène ramène par oxydation le composé phosphate protoné à sa forme active. l'emploi de phosphates d'ammonium dans la solution de lavage permet de réduire la pression de la vapeur, ce qui atténue la réaction entre l'ammoniac gazeux et l'anhydride sulfureux sous forme de panaches visibles de sulfites d'ammonium.
