an aqueous mixture of an ungelled interaction product comprising a. a polyhydroxylated polymer having the hydroxylation present as a plurality of pendant constituents, wherein the hydroxyl pendant constituents are the predominant pendant constituents, selected from the group consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) and copolymers thereof and watersoluble carbohydrates and b. a reactable organosilane having up to 3 groups selected from alkoxy, aryloxy, hydroxy or mixtures thereof attached to the silane and having reactable organo groups selected from the group consisting of isocyanato alkyl , isocyanato aryl , isocyanato aralkyl, where the isocyanato groups are capped or uncapped, ester-containing alkyl, aryl, aralkyl and, where the polyhydroxylated polymer is poly(vinyl alkohol) or a copolymer thereof, glycidoxy alkyl, glycidoxy aryl and glycidoxy aralkyl, said aqueous mixture of said interaction product being formed by intimately contacting the polyhydroxylated polymer and the reactable organosilane, the polyhydroxylated polymer being applied as an aqeous solution, emulsion or dispersion containing about 5 to about 40 % by weight thereof and the reactable organosilane being used in an amount such that at least one and up to less than about 50 % of the number of pendant hydroxyl constituents on the polyhydroxylated polymer are reacted, and the intimate contacting being performed at a ph of up to about 4 or 9 or greater and at a temperature ranging from ambient to elevated temperatures less than about 100 °c to produce an aqueous mixture of the ungelled interaction product.
