1. malaria: malaria is a very common disease in developing countries. the word malaria is derived from the word ‘mal-aria meaning bad air. ronald ross first discovered the transmission of malaria by mosquitoes bite, while he was working in india (secunderabad, ap) in 1897. malaria is one of the most widespread diseases in the world. each year, there are 300 to 500 million clinical cases of malaria, 90 percent of them in africa alone. among all infectious diseases, malaria continues to be one of the biggest contributors to disease burden in terms of deaths and suffering. malaria kills more than one million children a year in the developing world, accounting for about half of malaria deaths globally. the risk of getting malaria extends to almost the entire population in india (almost 95 percent). the states that have the highest number of malaria cases are madhya pradesh, maharashtra, orissa, karnataka, rajasthan, assam, gujarat and andhra pradesh. symtoms - the malaria is maily acting on blood cells rbc. they multiply in red cell and kill red cell within 24-48 hours. every cycle of this killing red cell causes the episode of fever. this causes the cyclic fever in patient. each episode the patient is losing blood red cell so delay in treatment patient will fall in anaemic condition. thus malaria is one of important cause of anaemia in country like india. diagnosis- malaria is diagnosed based on peripheral smear examination for malaria parasite. the gold standard for malaria is smear examination form blood. but other rapid diagnosist tests are available in market to diagnose malaria. for blood smear examination the finger prick or venous blood is taken on slide and thick & thin spears are made. under microscope these smears are examined for malaria parasites. if they found in smear, the test is positive. the rapid diagnostic tests are available in market for blood diagnosis of malaria. these kits are simple and more specific than smear examination. but still smear examination is important in diagnosis of malaria. expert advice- malaria is important disease for the travellers coming to india from country like usa. they need to take some precaution while travelling through india. even within country he/she should aware about the different type of endemicity of disease. the cdc is regularly giving guidelines for international travellers for various diseases. it is requested to read this guideline.
