and we sent no prophet unto any township but we did afflict its folk with tribulation and adversity that haply they might grow humble.
او رہم نے کسی بستی میں کوئی پیغمبرنہیں بھیجا مگر وہاں کے لوگوں کو سختی اور تکلیف میں پکڑا تاکہ وہ عاجزی کریں

and we sent not a prophet to any township but we laid hold of the people thereof with tribulation and distress that haply they may humble themselves.
او رہم نے کسی بستی میں کوئی پیغمبرنہیں بھیجا مگر وہاں کے لوگوں کو سختی اور تکلیف میں پکڑا تاکہ وہ عاجزی کریں

we have sent already unto peoples that were before thee, and we visited them with tribulation and adversity, in order that they might grow humble.
اور بیشک ہم نے آپ سے پہلے بہت سی اُمتوں کی طرف رسول بھیجے، پھر ہم نے ان کو (نافرمانی کے باعث) تنگ دستی اور تکلیف کے ذریعے پکڑ لیا تاکہ وہ (عجز و نیاز کے ساتھ) گِڑگڑائیں،

who expend both in joy and tribulation, who suppress their anger and pardon their fellowmen; and god loves those who are upright and do good,
جو آسودگی اور تنگی میں (اپنا مال خدا کی راہ میں) خرچ کرتےہیں اور غصے کو روکتے اور لوگوں کے قصور معاف کرتے ہیں اور خدا نیکو کاروں کو دوست رکھتا ہے

then changed we the evil plight for good till they grew affluent and said: tribulation and distress did touch our fathers. then we seized them unawares, when they perceived not.
پھر ہم نے (ان کی) بدحالی کی جگہ خوش حالی بدل دی، یہاں تک کہ وہ (ہر لحاظ سے) بہت بڑھ گئے۔ اور (نا شکری سے) کہنے لگے کہ ہمارے باپ دادا کو بھی (اسی طرح) رنج اور راحت پہنچتی رہی ہے سو ہم نے انہیں اس کفرانِ نعمت پر اچانک پکڑ لیا اور انہیں (اس کی) خبر بھی نہ تھی،

when we give mankind a taste of our blessing, they rejoice therein: but if they encounter tribulation because of their own actions -- they fall into despair.
اور جب ہم انسانوں کو رحمت کا مزہ چکھادیتے ہیں تو وہ خوش ہوجاتے ہیں اور جب انہیں ان کے سابقہ کردار کی بنا پر کوئی تکلیف پہنچ جاتی ہے تو وہ مایوسی کا شکار ہوجاتے ہیں

thereafter we substituted ease in place of adversity until they abounded and said: even thus tribulation and prosperity touched our fathers. then we laid hold of them of a sudden, while they perceived not.
پھر ہم نے (ان کی) بدحالی کی جگہ خوش حالی بدل دی، یہاں تک کہ وہ (ہر لحاظ سے) بہت بڑھ گئے۔ اور (نا شکری سے) کہنے لگے کہ ہمارے باپ دادا کو بھی (اسی طرح) رنج اور راحت پہنچتی رہی ہے سو ہم نے انہیں اس کفرانِ نعمت پر اچانک پکڑ لیا اور انہیں (اس کی) خبر بھی نہ تھی،

go on fighting with them till there is no more a state of tribulation and allah's way is established instead. then if they desist from it, there should be no more hostility except against those who had been guilty of cruelty and brutality.
ان سے لڑو جب تک کہ فتنہ نہ مٹ جائے اور اللہ تعالیٰ کا دین غالب نہ آجائے، اگر یہ رک جائیں (تو تم بھی رک جاؤ) زیادتی تو صرف ﻇالموں پر ہی ہے

it is not righteousness that ye turn your faces to the east and the west; but righteous is he who believeth in allah and the last day and the angels and the scripture and the prophets; and giveth wealth, for love of him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask, and to set slaves free; and observeth proper worship and payeth the poor-due. and those who keep their treaty when they make one, and the patient in tribulation and adversity and time of stress. such are they who are sincere. such are the allah-fearing.
ساری اچھائی مشرق ومغرب کی طرف منھ کرنے میں ہی نہیں بلکہ حقیقتاً اچھا وه شخص ہے جو اللہ تعالی پر، قیامت کے دن پر، فرشتوں پر، کتاب اللہ پر اور نبیوں پر ایمان رکھنے واﻻ ہو، جو مال سے محبت کرنے کے باوجود قرابت داروں، یتیموں، مسکینوں، مسافروں اور سوال کرنے والے کو دے، غلاموں کو آزاد کرے، نماز کی پابندی اور زکوٰة کی ادائیگی کرے، جب وعده کرے تب اسے پورا کرے، تنگدستی، دکھ درد اور لڑائی کے وقت صبر کرے، یہی سچے لوگ ہیں اور یہی پرہیزگار ہیں
