l33 is an il1 family cytokine that signals via a heterodimetric receptor complex which compromises the il1 receptor family member st2l,and it’s co-receptor,il1 receptor accessory protein(il-1racp).recent studies have shown that full length il33 is biologically active.expression of il33 has been found in variety of tissues including stomach,lungs and prostate,however in contrast to other family member that are expressed predominantly in immune cells,il33 is expressed in endothelial cells,epithelial cells,and fibroblasts.many reports have suggested a role of il33 in many acute and chronic inflammatory & auto immune disease including asthma,rheumatic arthritis,anaphylactic shock,inflammatory bowel disease.il33 is a double function cytokine which not only acts as a classical cytokine,nut also as a nuclear factor which transcriptional repressor activity.although il33 is known to be involved in regulating chromatin compaction but the precise function of nuclear il33 remains unsolved unlike other il1 family cytokines.il33 has been found to activate mast cells and basophils and to stimulate the production of numerous pro-inflammatory cytokine including tnf,il1,il6 and interferon-gamma in these cells.
