50 "la session du cio, rappelant d'une part les pr éocc upations expr imées par les partic ipants au congr ès oly mpique du centenaire, congr ès de l'unité, selon les quelles le mouv ement olympique devrait jouer un rôle impor tant dans le domaine de l'envir onnement et, d'autre part, le fait que le cio a, même avant le congr ès oly mpique du centenaire, congrès de l'unité, adopté et fait connaîtr e s a politique en matièr e d'env ironnement, reconnaissant l'occ asion unique que constitue la tenue r égulièr e des jeux oly mpiques pour s ouligner l'importance de l'envir onnement, ayant à l'esprit l'initiativ e par laquelle le cio a c onv oqué la conférence mondiale sur le sport et l'env ironnement en juillet 1995 à laus anne et les nombr eus es suggestions positives d'action et de rec onnaissanc e par la communauté mondiale des actions et des efforts du cio en faveur de la pr otection de l' envir onnement, const atant qu'il s e pr ésente de nombr eus es occ asions de coopér ation avec d'autr es organis ations internationales et nationales, gouv ernementales et non gouv ernementales, dans des activ ités visant la pr otection de l'env ironnement, croyant fer me ment que la politique du cio en matièr e d'environnement devr ait lui être pr opr e; que les efforts d'autres gr oupes ay ant des objec tifs en matière de protection de l'env ironnement doivent êtr e pris en c ons idér ation pour l'établiss ement de sa poli tique; qu'il ne devr ait pas laisser d'autres objectifs s upplanter les s iens, relevant qu'il ne faut jamais oublier les traits car actér istiques du cio, organisation inter nationale traitant auss i bien av ec les pays dév elo ppés qu'av ec les pays en dév eloppement; que l' évaluation de la politique de protection de l' envir onnement ains i que les moy ens de la mettr e en oeuvr e et de la diffuser le plus efficac ement poss ible doivent être adaptés aux différents pays conc ernés, rappelant en outr e qu'il peut y av oir, quant aux mesures ou comportements spéc ifiques, des dif férences de cultur e et de perc eption qui doivent être pris es en cons idér ation av ant qu'une position définitive ne soit adoptée; qu'il est impor tant d'adopter un c omportement 'pr évoyant' en matière d'envir onnement; qu'en l' es pèce, l'éducation est un outil extr aordinaire pour faire prendre c onscience aux indiv idus du bes oin d'e ncourager un dév eloppement durable : que certains pays pourr aient av oir des pr iorités différentes en matière d'env ironnement et que c es préoccupations doiv ent êtr e pr ises en cons idér ation lorsque l'on évalue un comportement en matière de pr otection de l'environnement, souhaite la pours uite des efforts en vue de protéger l'env ironnement et d'éduquer la jeuness e du monde s ur s a r esponsabilité à c et égar d : relève que, malgr é la création de la commission s ur l'env ir onnement, il ne faut pas oublier que la r esponsabilité des ques tions liées à l'environnement inc ombe en der nier lieu aux autor ités compétentes et que le rôle même du cio est d'encourager une conduite r esponsable en matière de protection de l'environnement".
44 "the ioc session, recalling on the one hand the concer ns expr essed by the par tic ipants at the centennial oly mpic congress, congr ess of unity , that the oly mpic mov ement take a leading role w ith r es pec t to the env ironment, and noting, on the other hand, that, even prior to the centennial oly mpic congr ess, congress of unity, the ioc adopted and published its policy on the env ir onment, recognizing the unique opportunity prov ided by the r egular celebr ation of the oly mpic games to emphasiz e the importanc e of the envir onment, keeping in m ind the ac tion of the ioc in convening the wor ld confer ence on sport and the env ir onment in laus anne in july 1995 and the many pos itive suggestions for action as w ell as recognitio n by the w orld community of the actions and efforts by the ioc in s upport of protec tion of the environment, observing that many opportunities may pr esent thems elv es for c ooperation w ith other inter national and national gov er nmental and non-gov ernmental organizations in activities direc ted tow ard pr otection of the env ir onment, firm ly believing that io c policy on env ir onment s hould he s pecific to the io c; that efforts by other groups hav ing goals in the field of the pr omotion of the env ir onment should be taken into acc ount by the ioc w hen establishing its policy; that the ioc should not let other objectiv es s upplant its o n. w noting that it is important to bear in mind the specific c har acter of the ioc as an inter national organiz ation dealing w ith developed and dev eloping c ountries ; that the evaluation of the envir onment protection policy as w ell as of the means of implementing and propagating it in the most efficient w ay possible must be adapted to the c ountry c oncer ned, recalling that there may exist, w ith regar d to s pec ific measures or behavior, cultural and perceptional differences that should be taken into consider ation befor e any definite position is adopted; that it is important to adopt a fores ightful approach to the env ir onment; that, in this respect, educ ation is an extr aor dinary tool for aw akenin g in individuals an aw areness of the necessity of encouraging sustainable dev elopment; that some c ountries may have differing prior ities in the field of envir onment, and that these c onc er ns should be taken into consideration w hen ev aluating behavior in the field of the protection of the env ironment, desires that further efforts be c arried out to pr otect the envir onment and to educ ate the y outh of the w orld concer ning its r espons ibility in this regar d; notes that notw ithstanding the establishment of the ioc commission on spor t and the env ironment, it must be reme mbered that the ultimate respons ibility for matters relating to the env ironment rests w ith the competent authorities and that the proper role of the ioc is to enc our age env ironmentally r esponsible c onduct".
