so we chastised them. the desolate locations of both communities lie on a well-known highway.
そこでわれはそれに報復した。本当にこの2つ（の跡）は大道に沿って，（今）明らか（に見られるの）である。

they also said, 'we are more abundant in wealth and children, and we shall not be chastised.'
「また，わたしたちは多くの財産と子女があるので，懲罰される（ような）ことはありません。」とも言った。

they always said: “we have more wealth and children than you have, and we shall not be chastised.”

and if you chastise, chastise even as you have been chastised; and yet assuredly if you are patient, better it is for those patient.
もしあなたがたが罰するなら，あなたがたが悩まされたように罰しなさい。だがあなたがたがもし耐え忍ぶならば，それは耐え忍ぶ者にとって最も善いことである。

had god not prescribed dispersal for them, he would have chastised them in this world; and there awaits them in the world to come the chastisement of the fire.
アッラーは，仮令かれらに対し，放逐と御決めにならなくても，必ず現世においてかれらを懲罰なされる。また，来世においては（必ず）火獄の懲罰がある。

so he chastised them with setting hypocrisy in their hearts until the day they shall meet him, because they kept back from allah that which they had promised him, and because they were wont to lie.
それでかれらがかれに会う日まで，その心の中に偽善を抱かせて懲らしめられる。それはかれらがアッラーとの約束を破り，（度々）偽りを言っていたためである。

has he forged a lie against allah, or is he afflicted with madness?” nay, but those who do not believe in the hereafter are doomed to be chastised and are far gone in error.
だがかれはアッラーに就いて，虚偽を言ったのか。それとも気違いになってしまったというのか。いや，かれらは来世を信じない，懲罰の中にいる酪い心得違いの者である。

then allah caused his tranquillity to descend upon his messenger and upon the believers, and he sent down hosts whom you did not see, and chastised those who disbelieved. such is the recompense of those who deny the truth.
その後アッラーは，使徒と信者たちの上にかれの安らぎを下し，またあなたがたには見えなかったが，軍勢を遣わして不信心な者たちを懲罰された。このようにかれは，不信者に報いられる。

then god sent down upon his messenger his shechina, and upon the believers, and he sent down legions you did not see, and he chastised the unbelievers; and that is the recompense of the unbelievers;
その後アッラーは，使徒と信者たちの上にかれの安らぎを下し，またあなたがたには見えなかったが，軍勢を遣わして不信心な者たちを懲罰された。このようにかれは，不信者に報いられる。

and answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, my father made your yoke heavy, but i will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but i will chastise you with scorpions.
若者たちの勧めに従い、彼らに告げて言った、「父はあなたがたのくびきを重くしたが、わたしは更にこれを重くしよう。父はむちであなたがたを懲らしたが、わたしはさそりであなたがたを懲らそう」。

all that; and whosoever chastises after the manner that he was chastised and then again is oppressed, assuredly god will help him; surely god is all-pardoning, all-forgiving.
それは（こうである）。誰でも自分が被ったものと同じ報復をしたのに，また不当な仕打ちをされるならば，アッラーは必ずこの者を助けなされる。本当にアッラーは寛容にしてよく赦される御方である。
