sociologist mike messner (1992) interviewed former male athletes. they stated that sports allowed them to connect with their fathers. however, they realized that it was only limited to sports. to maintain their bond with their fathers, they continued to play sports. studies in the us and austrailia by janet chafetz and joe kotarba (1999) and shona thompson (1999a,b) respectively, highlighted the fact that organized sport programs depended on labor from parents. it showed that mothers handled their children's needs and off-field works. while fathers, on the other hand, dealt with on-the-field, and administrative works. the study focused on which parent labor reproduces a gendered division of labor and highlighted the importance of the labor of mothers to delve deeper in family dynamics of youth sports.
