māṭhara then took a wife of equal caste
དེ་ནས་གནས་ལེན་གྱི་བུ་དེས་རིགས་མཉམ་པ་ལས་ཆུང་མ་བླངས་ཏེ།

i shall go elsewhere.” he said to his wife,
བདག་གཞན་དུ་འགྲོའོ་སྙམ་ནས་དེས་ཆུང་མ་ལ་སྨྲས་པ།

when a householder living in Śrāvastī took a wife of equal caste
མཉན་ཡོད་ན་ཁྱིམ་བདག་ཅིག་འདུག་པ་དེས་རིགས་མཉམ་པ་ལས་ཆུང་མ་བླངས་ནས། །

i shall give Śārikā to him as a wife.” koṣṭhila replied,
འདི་ལ་ཤཱ་རི་ཀཱ་དེ་ཆུང་མའི་དོན་དུ་སྦྱིན་པར་བྱའོ། །དེས་སྨྲས་པ།

enjoined the householder and his wife to seek refuge and pledge to uphold the precepts.
དེས་ཁྱིམ་བདག་དེ་ཆུང་མ་དང་བཅས་པ་སྐྱབས་སུ་འགྲོ་བ་དང་བསླབ་པའི་གཞི་དག་ལ་བཞག་གོ། །

i will give Śārikā to him as a wife.” māṭhara then said to his wife,
འདི་ལ་ཤཱ་རི་ཀཱ་དེ་ཆུང་མའི་དོན་དུ་སྦྱིན་ནོ་སྙམ་ནས་དེས་ཆུང་མ་ལ་སྨྲས་པ།

his wife gave guardianship of their son to relatives while supporting and providing for him through her own industry.
མས་ཁྱེའུ་དེ་ཉེ་དུའི་མཐུ་དང་ལག་མཐུས་བསྙོད་ཅིང་གསོས་ཏེ་

the wife with whom he had sported, made love, and indulged all his desires later gave birth to a son.
རྩེ་བར་བྱེད། དགའ་བར་བྱེད། དགའ་མགུར་སྤྱོད་པར་བྱེད་པ་དེའི་བུ་བྱུང་ནས།

and so his wife, with the help of relatives and by her own industry, fed and nurtured their son as he grew.
དེས་ཀྱང་བུ་དེ་ཉེ་དུའི་སྟོབས་དང་ལག་མཐུས་བསྙོད་ཅིང་གསོས་ཏེ་བསྐྱེད་དོ། །

after a while, their brahmin father’s time came, as did his wife’s.
ཇི་ཙམ་དུས་གཞན་ཞིག་ན་དེ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་ཕ་བྲམ་ཟེ་དེ་ཆུང་མ་དང་བཅས་ཏེ་དུས་ལ་བབ་བོ། །

i was thinking about the wife of king suvarṇapati of suvarṇadvīpa. when her husband’s time had come, she leapt onto his funeral pyre.
འདི་ལྟར་གསེར་གླིང་ན་རྒྱལ་པོ་གསེར་བདག་ཅེས་བྱ་བ་དུས་ལ་བབ་པ་དེའི་ཆུང་མ་མེའི་ཕུང་པོར་མཆོངས་པ་ན་དེ་ལ་ཁོ་བོ་འདི་སྙམ་དུ་སེམས་ཏེ།

the wife with whom he had sported, made love, and indulged all of his desires then gave birth to a son, after which the householder said to her,
རྩེ་བར་བྱེད། དགའ་བར་བྱེད། དགའ་མགུར་སྤྱོད་པར་བྱེད་པ་དེའི་བུ་བྱུང་ནས་དེས་ཆུང་མ་ལ་སྨྲས་པ།
