i wanted to go back there. i wanted to go, i wanted to allow myself time, time that i could use to contemplate and find a new perspective. i wanted to do all the things i didn't have time to do in the weeks following the first earthquake of may 20th, where i found myself directly involved, not only as a photographer compelled to report, but as a helpless soul, who, with so many others, was forced to live and endure this tragic event.
volevo ritornare in quei luoghi colpiti, volevo provare a farlo con un tempo un'attenzione e uno sguardo diversi, quel che non mi ero potuto concedere allora, quando da subito e nelle settimane successive alla prima scossa del 20 maggio mi sono trovato direttamente coinvolto non solo come fotografo, con il dovere di documentare, ma anche come chi, da impotente, stava vivendo e subendo insieme a tanta altra gente un evento di tale portata.

it happens like this also in life, sometimes one meets people he likes very much, but finally realizes they aren't suitable for us. so i stopped composing: on the other hand i was successful as a pianist, i was young, i felt like asserting myself and i didn't have enough time to write music.
succede così anche nella vita, a volte si trovano persone che magari ci piacciono moltissimo, ma poi si capisce che 'non fanno per noi'. così ho smesso di comporre, e d'altronde avevo molto successo come pianista, ero giovane, avevo voglia di affermarmi e non mi restava molto tempo per scrivere musica.

"well when i was with jim i didn't have that much of an urge to write because i was always so much in love with what jim did (...) he fulfilled all that need for creativity on the individual's members' part by the songs he would write. (...) before jim died i really didn't feel that much of an urge to write.
"beh, quando ero con jim non avevo un grande impulso a scrivere perché mi piaceva sempre tantissimo quello che jim scriveva (...) lui era in grado di soddisfare quel bisogno di creatività da parte dei membri del gruppo con le canzoni che scriveva. (...) prima della morte di jim non ho sentito tutta questa urgenza di scrivere.
