the invention relates to a transcoding and transdecoding unit in a digital mobile radio system, and to methods for adjusting their output signals. the unit comprises an expander unit (ed) for converting companded digital data (sd1) into a linear signal (sd2); a speech encoder (301) for coding a linearized signal (sd3) into encoded form (sd4); and an amplifying means (vd) for amplifying the expanded signal (sd2). in order that the outbound audio signal would not suffer interference due to the raised level, the transcoding unit further comprises a level monitoring means (td) for monitoring the amplitude of the linearized signal (sd2) and for controlling said amplifying means (vd) such that the signal (sd3) produced by the amplifying means is of a desired level.
