claims for the following contracting state : es, gr a process for the preparation of benzimidazole derivatives of the structure formula: wherein a represents n is 0 or 1 m represents 0 or an integer of from 1 to 5 inclusive, provided that when n is 0, m represents an integer of from 2 to 5 inclusive; x represents a radical selected from the group consisting of benzyl, fluorobenzyl, ethoxyethyl, allyloxyethyl and tetrahydrofurfuryl provided that when x is benzyl and n is 0, m is an integer 3 to 5 inclusive; r₁ and r₂ represent each an alkyl radical having of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms or they may form, together with the adjacent nitrogen atom, an heterocyclic ring selected from the group consisting of pyrrolidine and piperidine, and, additionally, the following compound: 1-(2-ethoxyethyl)-2-(3-diallylaminopropyl)benzimidazole, and their corresponding non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts, characterized in that o-phenylendiamine is made to react with a suitable acid hooc-an-(ch₂) m -n(r₁)r₂ wherein a, n, m, r₁ and r₂ have the above-mentioned meaning, that the obtained benzimidazole derivative is reacted in alkaline ambient in the presence of a suitable solvent with an halide hal x wherein hal is an halogen atom and x has the above-mentioned meaning or o-phenylendiamine is made to react with hooc-(ch₂)₃-n(ch₂-ch=ch₂ )₂ and that the obtained benzimidazole derivative is reacted in alkaline ambient in the presence of a suitable solvent with an halide hal-ch₂-ch₂och₂ch₃ wherein hal is an halogen atom and that, optionally the obtained derivatives are transformed into their corresponding non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts.
