for it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
क्योंकि धर्म के मार्ग में न जानना ही उन के लिये इस से भला होता, कि उसे जानकर, उस पवित्रा आज्ञा से फिर जाते, जो उन्हें सौंपी गई थी। उन पर यह कहावत ठीक बैठती है,

and when any tidings of peace or war come to them they spread the news around . had they gone to the prophet or those in authority among them , then those who check and scrutinize would have known it , and but for the favour of god and his mercy you would certainly have followed satan , except a few .
और जब उनके पास अमन या ख़ौफ़ की ख़बर आयी तो उसे फ़ौरन मशहूर कर देते हैं हालॉकि अगर वह उसकी ख़बर को रसूल और ईमानदारो में से जो साहबाने हुकूमत तक पहुंचाते तो बेशक जो लोग उनमें से उसकी तहक़ीक़ करने वाले हैं उसको समझ लेते कि और अगर तुमपर ख़ुदा का फ़ज़ल और उसकी मेहरबानी न होती तो चन्द आदमियों के सिवा तुम सबके सब शैतान की पैरवी करने लगते

and when there comes to them news of security or fear they spread it abroad ; and if they had referred it to the apostle and to those in authority among them , those among them who can search out the knowledge of it would have known it , and were it not for the grace of allah upon you and his mercy , you would have certainly followed the shaitan save a few
और जब उनके पास अमन या ख़ौफ़ की ख़बर आयी तो उसे फ़ौरन मशहूर कर देते हैं हालॉकि अगर वह उसकी ख़बर को रसूल और ईमानदारो में से जो साहबाने हुकूमत तक पहुंचाते तो बेशक जो लोग उनमें से उसकी तहक़ीक़ करने वाले हैं उसको समझ लेते कि और अगर तुमपर ख़ुदा का फ़ज़ल और उसकी मेहरबानी न होती तो चन्द आदमियों के सिवा तुम सबके सब शैतान की पैरवी करने लगते

(instead of this,) they began to follow that (magic) to which the devils falsely attributed (the greatness of) the kingdom of solomon. in fact solomon was never involved in any practice of disbelief, but the satans, who taught magic to the people were themselves guilty of disbelief. they were after that thing which was sent to harut and marut, the two angels at babylon. whenever these two angels taught black art to anyone, they would always give a clear warning beforehand, saying, "we are merely a trial for you; so you should not commit blasphemy. but in spite of this warning, those people used to learn from the angels the art which caused division between husband and wife. although it was obvious that they could not do any harm to anyone by means of this magic without allah's permission, yet they learnt that art which could not be profitable even for them but was actually harmful. moreover, they knew it full well that anyone, who purchased that art, would have no share in the hereafter. what a vile commodity it was for which they sold off their souls, if they had but known it!
और जो वे उस चीज़ के पीछे पड़ गए जिसे शैतान सुलैमान की बादशाही पर थोपकर पढ़ते थे - हालाँकि सुलैमान ने कोई कुफ़्र नहीं किया था, बल्कि कुफ़्र तो शैतानों ने किया था; वे लोगों को जादू सिखाते थे - और उस चीज़ में पड़ गए जो बाबिल में दोनों फ़रिश्तों हारूत और मारूत पर उतारी गई थी। और वे किसी को भी सिखाते न थे जब तक कि कह न देते, "हम तो बस एक परीक्षा है; तो तुम कुफ़्र में न पड़ना।" तो लोग उन दोनों से वह कुछ सीखते है, जिसके द्वारा पति और पत्नी में अलगाव पैदा कर दे - यद्यपि वे उससे किसी को भी हानि नहीं पहुँचा सकते थे। हाँ, यह और बात है कि अल्लाह के हुक्म से किसी को हानि पहुँचनेवाली ही हो - और वह कुछ सीखते है जो उन्हें हानि ही पहुँचाए और उन्हें कोई लाभ न पहुँचाए। और उन्हें भली-भाँति मालूम है कि जो उसका ग्राहक बना, उसका आखिरत में कोई हिस्सा नहीं। कितनी बुरी चीज़ के बदले उन्होंने प्राणों का सौदा किया, यदि वे जानते (तो ठीक मार्ग अपनाते)
