they understood not that he spake to them of the father.

and they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܠܐ ܐܫܬܘܕܥܘ ܠܡܠܬܐ ܕܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ

but they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.
ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܠܐ ܝܕܥܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܠܗ ܠܡܠܬܐ ܘܕܚܠܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܕܢܫܐܠܘܢܝܗܝ

then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of john the baptist.
ܗܝܕܝܢ ܐܤܬܟܠܘ ܬܠܡܝܕܐ ܕܥܠ ܝܘܚܢܢ ܡܥܡܕܢܐ ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ

jesus saith unto them, have ye understood all these things? they say unto him, yea, lord.
ܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܝܫܘܥ ܐܤܬܟܠܬܘܢ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܗܠܝܢ ܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܗ ܐܝܢ ܡܪܢ

for he supposed his brethren would have understood how that god by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.
ܘܤܒܪ ܕܡܤܬܟܠܝܢ ܐܚܘܗܝ ܒܢܝ ܐܝܤܪܝܠ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܒܐܝܕܗ ܝܗܒ ܠܗܘܢ ܦܘܪܩܢܐ ܘܠܐ ܐܤܬܟܠܘ

and they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.

but they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
ܗܢܘܢ ܕܝܢ ܠܐ ܐܫܬܘܕܥܘܗ ܠܡܠܬܐ ܗܕܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܡܟܤܝܐ ܗܘܬ ܡܢܗܘܢ ܕܠܐ ܢܕܥܘܢܗ ܘܕܚܠܝܢ ܗܘܘ ܕܢܫܐܠܘܢܝܗܝ ܥܠܝܗ ܥܠ ܡܠܬܐ ܗܕܐ

so likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
ܗܟܢܐ ܐܦ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܐܢ ܬܐܡܪܘܢ ܡܠܬܐ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܘܠܐ ܬܗܘܐ ܡܦܫܩܐ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܡܬܝܕܥ ܡܕܡ ܕܐܡܪܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܗܘܝܬܘܢ ܠܟܘܢ ܐܝܟ ܗܘ ܕܥܡ ܐܐܪ ܡܡܠܠܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ

this man was taken of the jews, and should have been killed of them: then came i with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a roman.
ܠܓܒܪܐ ܗܢܐ ܐܚܕܘ ܝܗܘܕܝܐ ܐܝܟ ܕܢܩܛܠܘܢܗ ܘܩܡܬ ܐܢܐ ܥܡ ܪܗܘܡܝܐ ܘܦܪܩܬܗ ܟܕ ܝܠܦܬ ܕܪܗܘܡܝܐ ܗܘ

these things understood not his disciples at the first: but when jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

for the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and godhead; so that they are without excuse:
ܟܤܝܬܗ ܓܝܪ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܡܢ ܬܪܡܝܬܗ ܕܥܠܡܐ ܠܒܪܝܬܗ ܒܤܘܟܠܐ ܡܬܚܙܝܢ ܘܚܝܠܗ ܘܐܠܗܘܬܗ ܕܠܥܠܡ ܕܢܗܘܘܢ ܕܠܐ ܡܦܩ ܒܪܘܚ

as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
