དཔང་ཡིག་རང་འགུལ་གྱིས་དག་ཐེར་བྱས་པ

“o gautama, no self endures.”
ཀྱེ་གཽ་ཏ་མ་བདག་ནི་ཐམས་ཅད་མི་བཟོད་དོ། །

others hold the view and argue that no self endures,
གཞན་ཡང་འདི་ལ་ལ་ལ་བདག་ནི་ཐམས་ཅད་མི་བཟོད་དོ་ཞེས་དེ་ལྟར་ལྟ་ཞིང་དེ་སྐད་སྨྲ་བ་དང་།

perform a quick set of self-check tests.
མགྱོག་མྱུར་ངང་རང་ཉིད་བརྟག་དཔྱད་ཚད་ལེན་བྱེད་པ

thus that view of self too would be abandoned, discarded, and cease to be,
དེ་ལྟར་ན་བདག་ལ་ལྟ་བ་དེ་ཡང་སྤོང་བ་དང་། འདོར་བ་དང་། མེད་པར་འགྱུར་ལ།

as the group of six did whatever their self-appointed duties called for,
སྙམ་པས་དྲུག་སྡེ་དག་ལས་གང་ཡང་རུང་བས

if one holds the view and argues that all selves endure, then the view and argument that no self endures
གལ་ཏེ་བདག་ཐམས་ཅད་བཟོད་དོ་ཞེས་དེ་ལྟར་ལྟ་ཞིང་དེ་སྐད་སྨྲ་ན་བདག་ནི་ཐམས་ཅད་མི་བཟོད་དོ་ཞེས་དེ་ལྟར་ལྟ་ཞིང་དེ་སྐད་སྨྲ་བ་གང་ཡིན་པ་དང་།

if it counters, it would undermine, and if it undermines, it would debunk the self.
འགྱེད་པར་འགྱུར་ཏེ། རྩོད་ན་འགྱེད་པར་འགྱུར། འགྱེད་ན་རྣམ་པར་འཚེ་བར་འགྱུར་རོ། །

and the view and argument that some selves endure while other selves do not endure would counter and undermine the self;
བདག་ནི་ཁ་ཅིག་བཟོད་ལ་ཁ་ཅིག་མི་བཟོད་དོ་ཞེས་དེ་ལྟར་ལྟ་ཞིང་དེ་སྐད་སྨྲ་བ་གང་ཡིན་པ་གཉིས་དང་བདག་ལྷན་ཅིག་རྩོད་པར་འགྱུར།

if the blessed one was the first self-ordained one in this world, this retired devotee is the second.
འཇིག་རྟེན་ན་རང་བྱུང་གཅིག་ནི་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་ལགས་ན་གཉིས་པ་ནི་རྒན་ཞུགས་འདི་ལགས་སོ། །

as the group of six did whatever their self-appointed duties called for, they would never leave the gate into jetavana unattended.
རང་གི་གྲགས་པ་ཡང་བསྒྲག་པར་བྱའོ་སྙམ་པས་དྲུག་སྡེ་དག་ལས་གང་ཡང་རུང་བས་རྒྱལ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཚལ་གྱི་སྒོ་སྟོང་པར་མི་འཇོག་པས་

the blessed one replied at length, “son of a self-immolator, you are like and akin to most people,
མེར་འཇུག་གི་བུ་ཁྱོད་ནི་སྐྱེ་བོ་ཕལ་པོ་ཆེ་དང་ལྷན་ཅིག་མཚུངས་ཤིང་འདྲ་བར་འགྱུར་ཏེ། །

furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.
