un'altra prova provata della vocazione acquatica dei bovini e' nell'etimologia: una delle razze piu' diffuse al mondo e' la simmental (foto 5), il cui nome viene ingenuamente (o fraudolentemente) fatto derivare dal nome geografico (in tedesco "valle del fiume simme"), mentre e' con ogni evidenza collegato a "schwimmen", che in tedesco significa "nuotare" ed e' evidente che non si puo' nuotare su un pascolo, ma solo in acqua. un'altra razza estremamente diffusa e' la bruna alpina (foto 6), originariamente denominata schwitz, il cui nome si fa risalire all'omonimo cantone svizzero, mentre e' chiaramente derivato dal termine tedesco "schwitzen", che significa "sudare", reazione tipica di chi compie uno sforzo atletico prolungato, come una lunga nuotata.
