If wishes were horses, even beggars would ride. But sometimes dream come true. I am poor in life and my wishes are hopelessly small. I live in a state of uncertainty and I never know whether I shall be able to afford my next meal. But there is no check on one’s fancy. Fancy is my luxury. I wish I were a millionaire! As a poor man, I have often experienced that Rich men are generally selfish to the extent of being cruel. Their outlook on life is not human but materialistic. They forget that to be rich is not to be in human. When I am rich, I shall not forget god and god’s men. I long to lead some days in comfort. Money will end the state of uncertainty in which I live. Riches are a panacea. Poverty loses friends and makes one disrespectable and unacceptable in society. Wealth attracts and makes one honorable. If I were a millionaire, I would be in the company of rich friends and would be honorable. But being a millionaire is only a part of my desire. I know I get education under very difficult circumstances. So I shall open schools and colleges for the education of all. My great aim in life is to establish a univesierty in the model of ancient Indian universities. I want to go back to our old culture which was once the pride of the world. A wealthy man can do much good to this world. Wealth often spoils man. Money along with comforts and care brings evil also. Rich men are generally victims to one evil or the other. I have natural dislike for the base and the disreputable. I was born human and shall live a pious and noble life. This duty openly man owns to god. I shall fulfill this duty. I shall set a noble example before others and shall be a brilliant light for misguided millionaires. I would very much wish to encourage social service in the country. I shall make a trust which will look after the welfare of orphans. It is a pity that in our country wealthy persons do not possess charitable qualities. I shall lead a noble life and cut down my own expenses so that I may help others to live better. I am a noble-hearted and simple person. That is what I could remain even if I become a millionaire.

I am given to understand that, my beauty is unmatched, and so is my value in money. It is believed that I am the treasure for the elite rich of any society. A diamond is, I believe a very expensive stone, and, as for me -I am a complete set of several diamonds neatly set in platinum.' Regarding my birth, I am not at all aware of the time and the place, but I remember my younger days when I was being set in the platinum frame. When each diamond was being cut and polished, I very distinctly remember many of the little ones screeched in pain, but when they were all set together into one big piece of jewellery, it became a beautiful set - that is ME. Yes I do agree there is no gain without pain, so, only after all the diamonds bore the pain of being cut to size, the result was the beautiful ME. After being made to completion, I was placed in a case of maroon velvet and packed up. Now, I consist of six different items of jewellery i.e. one necklace, two bangles, two earrings, and one ring. When I am fixed in slot set for me in one big box, and I see my reflection in the glass in front of me, even I wonder at my excellent beauty and shine and dance with joy in my heart. I am settled in a jewellery shop in an area called Connaught Place. Here, I lie sometimes in the showcase, at other times in a Godrej Safe in the shop. Inside the Safe, I am believed to be secure, but believe me I get suffocated there and my prayers go out to God to send a customer quickly, who would take me out of this congestion. However, when i am set in the showcase outside enjoy myself. I can see people coming in and going out, discussing jewels and other things of importance and most of all enjoy people coming to see me and praise me. This praise boosts my spirit and feels that after all life is not really bad here even in the shop. All this makes me feel fresh and alive till, I am once again put inside the locker of the Godrej Safe. This continued to be my routine life and to be honest at times I even wondered why I had to be so beautiful and expensive that I have to bear the pain of a long boredom, and no one wants to buy me and give me a new lease of life elsewhere. While these thoughts were growing at me, at last, one day, I found my way to the hearts of a family. One fine day while I was inside the safe, a family called by the name of Taneja came to the shop. They asked my master if he could show them something in diamonds. This request of the Tanejas helped me come out of the safe as, at that time, I was the only diamond set at the shop. As soon as I was placed in front of the family, their young daughter, a bride-to-be jumped at me and requested her parents who were with her, to buy me forthwith. Since they had come to buy jewellery for her trousseau, the deal was struck at once and lo! and behold! at last I had found my rightful place in the beautiful neck, ears and arm of the lovely girl Vijayata. My present status, as I write this is that, I am a part of the girl's dowry and waiting to adorn the young girl when she becomes a bride. It is my proud privilege to belong to such an elite family - and that also to none other than their lovely daughter, and still further, of being a part of her trousseau. I am eagerly waiting for the big day when Vijayata will don me and people will admire me and appreciate me. It is by now certain that, there is no second to me in any jewellery shop at least in Delhi - that is not my version, that is what I often heard the customers at the shop say to my master. Now, my dear owner is keeping me safe inside her locker, once again to feel suffocated, though the pleasure of having this cute owner duly compensates for my troubles and woes. I have to remember all the time that, this is all in store for someone who is the best.

"Man goes from one woman to another, goes on changing. People think he is a great lover; he is not a lover at all. He is avoiding, he is trying to avoid any deep involvement because with deep involvement problems have to be faced, and much pain has to be gone through. So one simply plays safe; one makes it a point never to go too deeply into somebody. If you go too deep you may not be able to come back easily. And if you go deeply into somebody, somebody else will go deeply into you also; it is always proportionate. If I go very deep in you the only way is to allow you also to go that deep in me. It is a give and take, it is a sharing. Then one may get entangled too much, and it will be difficult to escape and the pain may be much. So people learn how to play safe: just let surfaces meet — hit-and-run love affairs. Before you are caught, run. This is what is happening in the modern world. People have become so juvenile, so childish; they are losing all maturity.Maturity comes only when you are ready to face the pain of your being; maturity comes only when you are ready to take the challenge. And there is no greater challenge than love." ~ Osho

I am a tree, tall and imposing, standing all alone near the campus of a temple. My life is ever so interesting as, I see a huge spectrum of society, funny gestures of people, and hear all kinds of conversation of the devotees who pass by me. I was not always so huge. As is true of all living beings I was also a long time back, a young sapling with this huge tree within me. At that time I looked fresh and beautiful as all other beings who are young, but, at that time I was of course not so imposing. This is what I have seen about life that, every stage has something good about it. I understand that, I am a peepal tree which just grows anywhere and everywhere. Ever since I was young, I remember several people coming to my root and worshipping me. They would light an earthenware lamp, and put it near my root, say their prayers and go away. This was a daily ritual which scores of people followed at my root ever since I can remember. As I started growing up bigger and bigger, the temple authorities put a two feet wall like boundary around my trunk. This was done to protect me from being destroyed by crowds who thronged to me. Since I am near a temple, I have always had the pleasure of a lot of company daily and, the great honour of being worshipped by scores of believers every day. Now, I am a full grown tree, and that two feet wall has been converted into a broad platform all around me, with my root out of sight, and the trunk also somewhat covered from vision. Here on the platform people sit and say their prayers and relax. At times they also consume their temple prasad while sitting on this platform. Oh, what a wonderful feeling it is to be so loved and cared for and, above all, being so honoured and respected. This honour is given to me as, I understand now that, a section of the Indian society considered me a holy tree to be worshipped. This is why there is so much hype about me and my kin. As I stand here, near a temple, I never ever feel lonely I get all sorts of company throughout the day, so, where is the scope of feeling lonely. Early in the morning the temple is opened at 6 a.m. It is cleaned and washed so, I get the company of people who clean the premises. They come to me also and broom the area around me, wash the platform and I am trim and neat to welcome my guests for the day. After the temple is cleaned there is a pooja, and from 7 a.m. devotees start pouring in, and the temple bells start ringing and breaking the silence of the night. Devotees continue pouring in the temple right from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., when the temple closes. These long hours of the day, there is no chance of my getting bored as, I have the company of so many people moving around the area. Even though I am alone, a lonely tree but, my life is full of thrill and excitement, as I get lots of, and variety of company. This in turn is an added honour for me that, while my friends have the company of trees only, I have the company of human beings who talk and walk and discuss matters to make my life more lively and enjoyable. I often wondered to myself as to why there is so much of greatness thrust upon me, though I am just a tree like any other. Yes, here is the catch, I believe I am so revered because I am considered by the Hindus, a religious sect as a holy tree, an incarnation of their God. Aha! this makes me feel proud of myself and I am prone to thank God for this birth in which I get honour, respect, love and care. What else could any living being aspire for. I and my honour are further enhanced as, I stand near a temple of God. Now, all my anxiety is put to rest as, I have learnt that I am also here to be worshipped just as God himself. I stand here alone yet in great company of human beings. My life is just wonderful, I pray to God that HE grant such a wonderful and eventful life to all humans. One thing I forgot to tell you all, about my life. When people come and sit on the platform around me, I also get a lot of information about man’s world. I hear scandals, I hear about murders, thefts and what all evils that exist in this man’s world. At times I also get to hear small children saying lovely words to their mothers and, seeing the mothers cajoling them, I feel what a beautiful life men have. Thus to add to my experience of life, I have come to know a lot about human beings and their lives. Their lives are also full of pleasures and disappointments. It is not that men only enjoy as, most of us lesser beings seem to feel. Men also have their own problems. So, to add up I’d say my life is a pleasure and a rich experience.

Human interference with our environment is excessive, and the situation is rapidly worsening due to our population growth. Policies must therefore be changed. These policies affect basic economic, technological, and ideological structures. The way to these policy changes is in the “Deep Ecology” ecosophy (110). Deep ecology is a philosophical way of looking at our environmental problems that was founded in 1972 by Norwegian Arne Naess, a former head of the philosophy department at the University of Oslo. Naess’ writings show us what is wrong with the world and give us a blueprint by which we can bring about change. In its most basic form, deep ecology is a necessary wisdom, requiring humans to see themselves as part of the bigger picture. That picture is our sacred relationship with Earth and all beings. Many believe overpopulation, the greenhouse effect, global warming, and loss of habitat are no cause for alarm. Some, in fact, claim media and politicians perpetuate the hysteria regarding our environmental decline because they have something to gain by painting such a bad picture. Countless studies I have read or am personally involved with, however, have convinced me these problems are real and can be resolved if the following are supported: 1. Continued inquiry into the appropriate human roles on our planet. 2. Root cause analysis of unsustainable practices. 3. Reduction of human consumption. 4. Conservation and restoration of ecosystems. 5. A life of committed action for Earth. (Oslo 1973) The solution to our ecosystem mess is through the principles Dr. Naess has developed. These principles begin with a statement that all life, human and nonhuman, has intrinsic value. This means everything about life is valuable, including individuals, cultures, species, habitats, and populations. Another principle states that the diversity of life forms contribute to our appreciation of their value, but these forms also have value in and of themselves. A person with first hand experience, or one who works in the ecological field, is mindful of the live-and-let-live axiom but, unfortunately, most relate this only to humans. Naess makes it another principle that humans have no right to reduce riches, resources, and diversity of life, except to fulfill vital needs. Human interference with the nonhuman world is out of control and getting worse (Drengson). . Therefore, the another principle requires strategies be put in place for the first-world nations to overcome delusions and laziness on these issues The next principle requires a major change in the policies that affect our economic, technologic and ideological norms. Our society's values are geared toward wealth and technological advancement, which result in reckless buying and careless disposal of our mass waste (Burton 2002). We need to appreciate life’s quality instead of what society sets as standards. This is the next principle, but the notion is difficult to characterize since quality of life cannot be quantified. The last principle simply states that if you believe in what deep ecology teaches, then you should do your best to employ those changes. As you can see, the fundamental principles of deep ecology outlined in Arne Naess’ writings demand radical changes in our life. Changes that affect our population growth, hazardous waste, and global warming dilemmas must include birth control, recycling, and yielding sustainable resources for energy and building. Population growth drives or multiplies most of our environmental problems. Between 1900 and 1999, world population quadrupled. Just between 1960 and 1999 it more than doubled, from three billion to over six billion and currently, we are growing more than 80 million people every year (2002 World Population Data Sheet). This growth means more energy and resource needs, more land occupied, and more waste. As population and consumption increase, there are fewer resources available per person. At some point, there are not enough resources to go around, and scarcity occurs. Resource scarcity is the root of many problems. If there are not enough resources to adequately support the population, poverty results. Greater environmental destruction occurs, as people are forced to over-exploit the resource base (Burton 2002). Scarcity leads to discrimination, because when resources are scarce, someone gets less. Girls, women, ethnic or religious minorities, the poor, and the elderly are most often victims of this (Population Reference Bureau 2002). Scarcity also leads to migration, conflict between bands, tribes or nations as they fight to obtain resources. This has been evidenced by the Aztec people’s demise. We should teach the deep ecology philosophy in school when the kids are small. This will ensure that our earth’s future will be in the hands of humans who have appreciation of our world and its inhabitants, living and nonliving. It will teach harmony instead of killing and dominance because deep ecology discards the survival of the fittest concept. (Oslo 1973) In closing, the earth is a living entity that is being snuffed-out by too many people. Selfishness and egocentricity is rampant and these attitudes need to be changed. The deep ecology philosophy, if made available to the world will do this. Just as philosophies taught by Aristotle, Hume, and Kant have open the door to new thinking, so can Naess beliefs.

The most important element of weather is water. We get water in different forms of precipitation. Rain is the most beneficial of all types of precipitation. Rain is what harvests our crops that give us food to eat. Without rain, no crops would grow and we would parish off the face of this Earth. Also, keeping our air clean is essential because we need air to breathe. Since water, food, and air are so important for our survival as human beings, I decided to do my report on factors of rain. The Mississippi River, the Great Lakes, and countless other river, lakes, and streams make up the water cover of the United States. What few people realize, though, is that a lot of our water is stored beneath the ground. The water is held naturally in cavities called aquifers. In urban areas, water supplies are stored in holding areas called reservoirs. Everyday, Americans are using water that comes from all of these sources. As many people are familiar with the water cycle, they fail to realize how important it really is. The water in Earth’s atmosphere condenses in the sky around small particles of dust. This procedure that is referred to as condensation is the process whereby water vapor changes to the liquid state. Then, rain falls from the clouds to the ground and makes its way into rivers, lakes, and aquifers. Eventually, almost all of the water evaporates back into the atmosphere from the sun. The demand for water is very high throughout the United States, especially where natural water resources are limited. Farmers use 140 billion gallons each day to grow crop and raise livestock. Industry needs 30 billion gallon for jobs that involve cooling machines and carrying waste. Individuals use up another 40 billion gallons in recreation and day-to-day tasks.
