aegilops l. is a major genus in the triticeae tribe and comprises 23 annual species with different ploidy levels. aegilops grows in both the mediterranean and irano turanian regions (hedge et al. 2002), and in cis and transcaucasia. some aegilops species are involved in wheat evolution and, thus, are of potential use in wheat improvement programs (konstantinos and bebeli 2010). ae. tauschii coss. is the d genome donor of bread wheat, triticum aestivum l. (mcfadden and sears 1946).
